Student Page Title Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits [ Teacher Page ] OIL SPILL CATASTROPHE!!!!!!!!!! SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT!!!!! An oil tanker sank in rough seas and it was the largest oil refiner in the Philippines, called Solar 1. There is 528,000 gallons of crude oil released into the ocean. Roughly 200 miles of coast line is covered in thick sludge, miles of coral reef have been destroyed and 2,470 acres of marine reserve badly damaged. The aquatic life is endangered and the environment is being demolished. The ecosystem in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras Island, Philippines, has been thrown a curve and needs help. The towns-people are looking for solutions to clean this mess up. Joseph Gajo, a local marine reserve caretaker, is quoted as saying, "My fear is all the mangrove trees will die. If the mangroves and coral die, this will affect fishermen.“ According to Guimaras Governor Joaquin Nava, 25,000 people are already affected or displaced. http ://oceans.greenpeace.org/en/the-expedition/news/recent-oil-spills Can our class help this community out? In groups you need to research enough information about oil spill to be able to complete our objectivies. You need to make people aware of this situtaion by creating a power point that presents oil spills and can make people aware of environments effects, and define oil spills. Seconly, you need create an excel spreadsheet of all the data we have collected about the deaths of organisms killed, and environments ruined since 1930. Finally, with all the information you have gathered you can write a letter to the towns people with solutions to clean up this spill.

Student Page Title Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits [ Teacher Page ] Attention! Now that you know your objectives your teacher will put you in groups of four to complete this project. Each member of this group will be assigned a character of the environment of the oil spill in the P hilippines . It is important to get along and work hard with one another because you get graded as a whole. Read the next section carefully and you will have a guide for your journey. Each member picks an element of the ecosystem they want to be and needs to research on the internet. Research the effects of an oil spill on them or the effect they have on the environment. Animal Organisms (Ex: aquatic and land life)- Oil is very detrimental to organisms, it ruins his/her environment for their shelter. The oil usually kills their food source. For example the oil contaminates the water a fish lives in, therefore the fish cannot live and an otter goes without its source of food. Same goes for all organisms like penguins but some organisms are less prominent in areas like the Philippines. Research all information about several types of organisms and what effect in the ecosystem would take place if they died from an oil spill. This member needs to make an excel spreadsheet of an average death toll of an organism of choice since 1930. They need to choose 4 oil spills to get data from. Oil: You are the oil and you need to research information of the importance of shipping oil . There are many reasons for the uses of oil and these need to be made a point as well. Humans use oil for many things and one main resource is gas for transportation. This member needs to collaborate with the Environment member to make a power point presentation. You need to find enough information about oil and its uses to make 6 creative and informative slides. These slides need to be interesting and if someone knows nothing about oil they will be knowledgeable after. Environment: You are the plants organisms , rocks, soil, fungi and etc. of this ecosystem. You and the animal organisms have a symbiotic relationship and the effects of an oil spill will kill them both. If the oil wipes out the vegetation the herbivores will die which implies that the carnivores will die. This member needs to work with the Oil member to make a power point presentation. You need to find enough information about how and oil spill effects its environment and you can talk about plants, fungi, etc. If you are unsure ask your teacher if the elements you choose are appropriate. You can choose from any oil spill event

Student Page Title Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits [ Teacher Page ] Congratulations!!! You have completed your research and help to inform people on oil spills and give solutions! As a group you have completed a full power point presentation, excel spreadsheet, and a letter to the public in publisher. You have done an amazing job and know you are fully informed about the effects and solutions about oil spills. Do you want to make a difference know that you know about this content? You can!!!! There is a lot of volunteer work to clean up these oil spills or you can make the public aware of this problem, or do more research for restoration with genetic transformation. Write to the newspaper or come to me with any questions about getting involved.

[ Student Page ] Title Introduction Learners Standards Process Resources Credits Teacher Page This lesson was developed as a part of my 10 th grade biology class. This project would be used during the ecology unit. This lesson is to increase the students understanding of an ecosystem and the symbiosis of the organisms and their environment. The students will research oil spills and their effects. Each student will represent one part of the eco-cycle like the animal organisms. They need to do all their research on the internet through educational websites. I have given them many sites to start their projects. After they have collected their data, the students will learn and use several different multimedia tools such as, PowerPoint, excel spreadsheet and publisher. They will transfer there research into these multimedia/ hyper studio tools. They will be put into groups of 4 and have individual objectives to complete which I have stated in the process. After they have completed those creating their multimedia tools, the group needs to present all the information gathered with their tools. The presentation needs to be 10 to 15min long. [ Student Page ] Title Introduction Learners Standards Process Resources Credits Teacher Page This lesson is anchored to 10 th grade biology class. This Web Quest will be implemented during the ecosystem unit and will help meet the course’s current events requirement. The Web Quest will also incorporated technology into this unit. Prior to this project students will need to know how to use and present multimedia tools, power point, excel spreadsheet and publisher. This would be covered in a quick lesson before this project. The students will also need to know how to do basic research on the internet, for instance going to Google and typing in keywords. The students will be lead through everything else in the project. [ Student Page ] Title Introduction Learners Standards Process Resources Credits Teacher Page Life Science: Students know and understand the characteristics and structure of living things, the processes of life, and how living things interact with each other and their environment. (Focus: Biology-- Anatomy, Physiology, Botany, Zoology, Ecology) 3.6. Changes in an ecosystem can affect biodiversity and biodiversity contributes to an ecosystem's dynamic equilibrium 3.7. There is a cycling of matter ( for example: carbon, nitrogen ) and the movement and change of energy through the ecosystem (for example: some energy dissipates as heat as it is transferred through a food web) 3.16. An organism’s adaptations (for example, structure, behavior) determine its niche (role) in the Environment Computers/Technology 5.2  The students will develop basic technology skills.          -Operate peripheral devices.          -Apply technology to strategies for problem solving and critical thinking. 5.3  The student will process, store, retrieve, and transmit electronic information.          -Use electronic encyclopedias, almanacs, indexes, and catalogs. 5.4  The student will communicate through application software.          -Use simple computer graphics and integrate graphics into word processed            documents.          -Use local and worldwide network communication devices. Evaluation Teacher Script Conclusion
[Student Page Title Introduction Learners Standards Process Resources Credits Teacher Page The students will be able to have one lesson about using multimedia tools and then go over this project as a class. They will have one full class time to find research using the internet. After that the students need to finish it outside of class and can come in during lunch or after school to use internet again. They will have half a day to organize there presentation. This is why it is important to stress to students that they need to focus on the computer lab day to complete there research because they will not have anymore class time. The project will be single disciplinary at the start when they conduct there own research but when they get together as a group to give the presentation it will be multidisciplinary. The teacher needs to randomly select the students for each group so that they do not pick their friends. The teacher needs to know how to use excel spreadsheet, PowerPoint, and publisher but besides that a novice teacher can conduct this lesson. The teacher will also need access and materials to show their students how to use these tools. The rest of the process is continued on the next page. Evaluation Teacher Script Conclusion

  • 10. • 11. • 12. • 13.
