A webquest about creating a rain-stick.

1. MyWebquest: Creating a Rainstick
 This webquest is designed for a Third Grade Science
Curriculum. The students will work in cooperative
groups. They will learn about history behind
rainsticks, the process of making a rainstick, and
creating a design for their rainsticks.

2. Introduction
Can YOU Be A Rain Maker?
 Have you ever experienced an extremely hot day
and you wished that it would magically rain to help
cool you off? Don’t you worry! We can create our
own rain!

3. Task
 We will be researching the history behind rainsticks
 Then you will be completing a chart on “How
rainsticks are made.”
 Next, you will complete a check list of the supplies
that are needed to create a rainstick
 Then you will be given the opportunity to think of a
design that you and your group can agree on
 Lastly, you will create your rainsticks

4. Process
1. Your group will research the history, process, and what is needed while creating a rainstick, and then complete a
“How a rainstick is made” chart. Print the following pages:

2. Copy the rainstick steps that you received on your website link to your personal “How a rainstick is made” chart.
3. Review your checklist so you are familiar with what is needed.
4. Listen to your group members ideas of the design of the rainstick ans coopoperately decide on one design
5. As a group, advertise a “Rainstick Day.” Your group will design posters explaining what rainsticks are and what their
purpose is. There will be a day where they show off their rainsticks and give it a try.

5. Process Continued
 Now that you know everything there is to know about rainsticks, it’s time
to make our own!
1. Read as a group the history behind rainsticks
2. Gather materials needed to make your rainstick.
3. Check off materials that were given to you that is needed in creating your rainstick.
4. Observe your How to Make a Rainstick chart
5. Give each student a task to complete.
6. When finished, take turns completing your decoration
7. Compare and contrast your rainstick to the rainsticks you read about.
8. Finally with a teachers permission, go outside and shake your rainstick and do a little dance.
9. Record what happened.

Congratulations!!
 You’ve learned a lot about rainsticks. During our activity,
we learned the history about rainsticks, how rainsticks
can be made, and what rainsticks are used for. Since we
made one rainstick per group, we will share the
rainsticks weekly, so everyone gets the chance to show
their family members what they have created.
