So the logical consequence of connecting both ideas is to also combine testing and operations.‘Why should we test our infrastructure?’ For me the answer to this question is quite simple: ‘Because infrastructure is code !’ Furthermore infrastructure is a crucial part of an application. It is basically the fundament of our app. Everyone just expects infrastructure to work, but the reality is quite different. Often the knowledge about infrastructure and its current status is isolated and if something goes wrong it triggers indescribable panic.Testing the infrastructure not only ensures that it works but also helps spreading knowledge about this black magic and making the current status more transparent to the team.Since the distribution of automated deployments and continuous delivery progresses quite extensively, experience in testing infrastructure will certainly become a skill many companies clamor for. This workshop reveals why this is an important part of the continuous delivery pipeline and includes a hands-on how to automate it.

GitOps is a paradigm or a set of practices that empowers developers to perform tasks which typically (only) fall under the purview of operations. It’s a way to do Kubernetes cluster management and application delivery by using Git as a single source of truth for declarative infrastructure and applications. Being Git at the center of delivery pipelines, engineers use familiar tools to make pull requests to accelerate and simplify both application deployments and operations tasks to Kubernetes. GitOps software agents (e.g. ArgoCD, Flux and Jenkins X) can alert on any divergence between Git with what’s running in a cluster, and if there’s a difference, Kubernetes reconcilers automatically update or rollback the cluster depending on the case. This talk will include a demo of ArgoCD/Flux/Jenkins X on how to configure and use it to accelerate and simplify application deployments.

As Cloud-native apps are driven by APIs, the development of such an app should start with defining the API in an API design-first approach. Within this session I'll give further insights into what makes Cloud-native development different from classical app development. Furthermore, we'll go through the respective development steps (API design, Service development, Deployment to OCI, API exposure) to make the session more practical. This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
