However, if back-end systems have to be replaced with a different technologies, the resulting changes are more radical. One example for such a change is the migration of database servers from a relational to a document-oriented storage engine. Based on an example application, we present an approach to perform such a migration and conclude some general guidance for migrating future applications.

Streaming with Oracle Data Integration
As a data integration professional, it’s almost a guarantee that you’ve heard of real-time stream processing of Big Data. The usual players in the open source world are Apache Kafka, used to move data in real-time, and Spark Streaming, built for in-flight transformations. But what about relational data? Quite often we forget that products incubated in the Apache Foundation can also serve a purpose for “standard” relational databases as well. But how? Well, let’s introduce Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle Data Integrator for Big Data. GoldenGate can extract relational data in real time and produce Kafka messages, ensuring relational data is a part of the enterprise data bus. These messages can then be ingested via ODI through a Spark Streaming process, integrating with additional data sources, such as other relational tables, flat files, etc, as needed. Finally, the output can be sent to multiple locations: on through to a data warehouse for analytical reporting, back to Kafka for additional targets to consume, or any number of targets. Attendees will walk away with a framework on which they can build their data streaming projects, combining relational data with big data and using a common, structured approach via the Oracle Data Integration product stack.

Automate your data flows with Apache NIFI
Apache Nifi is an open source dataflow platform that automates the flow of data between systems. It uses a flow-based programming model where data is routed through configurable "processors". Nifi was donated to the Apache Foundation by the NSA in 2014 and has over 285 processors to interact with data in various formats. It provides an easy to use UI and allows users to string together processors to move and transform data within "flowfiles" through the system in a secure manner while capturing detailed provenance data.

Samer Abdel-Hafez joined the FiberRing network team in December 2013 as Network Design Engineer. Samer’s responsibilities within the team include planning capacity for the large traffic volume of FiberRing, arranging interconnections in new locations and markets, designing advanced ad-hoc solutions for the FiberRing network and customers and advise the Network support team on day to day issues.
Abstract: FiberRing operates one of the largest content networks in the world, peaking at over 2 Tb/s. In order to facilitate troubleshooting, detect attacks and saving important data as router configurations, we implement a series of tools mostly implemented in house or open source.
The key point of this presentation is to describe how FiberRing is using these tools for:
monitoring: FiberRing makes extensive use of Opsview (Nagios) and NMIS. We utilise Opsview for alerts and reporting and NMIS for detailed traffic analysis.
capacity planning: FiberRing choose PMACCT as netflow collector software and implemented an in house front-end solution that helps us locate strategic peering partners and explore ways to reduce the costs to deliver our content.
DDOS attacks detection: As every large hosting provider, we are regularly target of DDoS attacks. We implement a set of linux boxes running running nfcapd to collect traffic flows with 1 minute/per host granularity. This gives us great flexibility and incredibly valuable data to quick detect attacks and take corrective actions.

SmartConnect uses a pipeline architecture to transform exports from other tools like ARIS into the SmartCore structure used by Semantic MediaWiki. The pipeline consists of components that read the export, map elements to the target structure, process elements, filter elements, and write them as wiki pages. This modular approach allows for customizing how different modeling tools' exports are imported.

Automate your data flows with Apache NIFI
Apache Nifi is an open source dataflow platform that automates the flow of data between systems. It uses a flow-based programming model where data is routed through configurable "processors". Nifi was donated to the Apache Foundation by the NSA in 2014 and has over 285 processors to interact with data in various formats. It provides an easy to use UI and allows users to string together processors to move and transform data within "flowfiles" through the system in a secure manner while capturing detailed provenance data.

From 1999 to 2013 Bart worked at Global Crossing (acquired by Level 3 in 2011), where he developed staffing, systems and business processes for Global Crossing’s European brand new sales team, built and coached a Wholesale Sales team to sign new telecom customers and grow revenues in various countries across Europe, led Global Crossing’s expansion into Central and Eastern Europe and established Level 3’s position in the Benelux broadcast market.
Samer Abdel-Hafez joined the FiberRing network team in December 2013 as Network Design Engineer. Samer’s responsibilities within the team include planning capacity for the large traffic volume of FiberRing, arranging interconnections in new locations and markets, designing advanced ad-hoc solutions for the FiberRing network and customers and advise the Network support team on day to day issues.
Abstract: FiberRing operates one of the largest content networks in the world, peaking at over 2 Tb/s. In order to facilitate troubleshooting, detect attacks and saving important data as router configurations, we implement a series of tools mostly implemented in house or open source.
The key point of this presentation is to describe how FiberRing is using these tools for:
monitoring: FiberRing makes extensive use of Opsview (Nagios) and NMIS. We utilise Opsview for alerts and reporting and NMIS for detailed traffic analysis.
capacity planning: FiberRing choose PMACCT as netflow collector software and implemented an in house front-end solution that helps us locate strategic peering partners and explore ways to reduce the costs to deliver our content.
DDOS attacks detection: As every large hosting provider, we are regularly target of DDoS attacks. We implement a set of linux boxes running running nfcapd to collect traffic flows with 1 minute/per host granularity. This gives us great flexibility and incredibly valuable data to quick detect attacks and take corrective actions.
routers’ configuration backups: FiberRing is actively involved in the development of Oxidized, an innovative configuration backup tool which poses itself as rancid replacement.

SMWCon Fall 2015: SmartConnect (a SmartSuite extension)
Dr. Remco de Boer presented on SmartConnect, a tool for importing content from other modeling environments into a Semantic MediaWiki. SmartConnect uses a pipeline architecture to transform exports from other tools like ARIS into the SmartCore structure used by Semantic MediaWiki. The pipeline consists of components that read the export, map elements to the target structure, process elements, filter elements, and write them as wiki pages. This modular approach allows for customizing how different modeling tools' exports are imported.
Building real time data-driven products
This presentation will describe how to go beyond a "Hello world" stream application and build a real-time data-driven product. We will present architectural patterns, go through tradeoffs and considerations when deciding on technology and implementation strategy, and describe how to put the pieces together. We will also cover necessary practical pieces for building real products: testing streaming applications, and how to evolve products over time.

Journey to the Data Lake: How Progressive Paved a Faster, Smoother Path to In...
Progressive Insurance is well known for its innovative use of data to better serve its customers, and the important role that Hortonworks Data Platform has played in that transformation. However, as with most things worth doing, the path to the Data Lake was not without its challenges. In this session, I’ll share our top use cases for Hadoop – including telematics and display ads, how a skills shortage turned supporting these applications into a nightmare, and how – and why – we now use Syncsort DMX-h to accelerate enterprise adoption by making it quick and easy (or faster and easier) to populate the data lake – and keep it up to date – with data from across the enterprise. I’ll discuss the different approaches we tried, the benefits of using a tool vs. open source, and how we created our Hadoop Ingestor app using Syncsort DMX-h.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
