Until recently, data was gathered for well-defined objectives such as auditing, forensics, reporting and line-of-business operations; now, exploratory and predictive analysis is becoming ubiquitous, and the default increasingly is to capture and store any and all data, in anticipation of potential future strategic value. These differences in data heterogeneity, scale and usage are leading to a new generation of data management and analytic systems, where the emphasis is on supporting a wide range of very large datasets that are stored uniformly and analyzed seamlessly using whatever techniques are most appropriate, including traditional tools like SQL and BI and newer tools, e.g., for machine learning and stream analytics. These new systems are necessarily based on scale-out architectures for both storage and computation.
Hadoop has become a key building block in the new generation of scale-out systems. On the storage side, HDFS has provided a cost-effective and scalable substrate for storing large heterogeneous datasets. However, as key customer and systems touch points are instrumented to log data, and Internet of Things applications become common, data in the enterprise is growing at a staggering pace, and the need to leverage different storage tiers (ranging from tape to main memory) is posing new challenges, leading to caching technologies, such as Spark. On the analytics side, the emergence of resource managers such as YARN has opened the door for analytics tools to bypass the Map-Reduce layer and directly exploit shared system resources while computing close to data copies. This trend is especially significant for iterative computations such as graph analytics and machine learning, for which Map-Reduce is widely recognized to be a poor fit.
While Hadoop is widely recognized and used externally, Microsoft has long been at the forefront of Big Data analytics, with Cosmos and Scope supporting all internal customers. These internal services are a key part of our strategy going forward, and are enabling new state of the art external-facing services such as Azure Data Lake and more. I will examine these trends, and ground the talk by discussing the Microsoft Big Data stack.

I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.

Building Production Ready Search Pipelines with Spark and Milvus
Spark is the widely used ETL tool for processing, indexing and ingesting data to serving stack for search. Milvus is the production-ready open-source vector database. In this talk we will show how to use Spark to process unstructured data to extract vector representations, and push the vectors to Milvus vector database for search serving.

It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to the 5th Power Grid Model Meet-up, scheduled for 6th June 2024. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

- 2. The Web Intelligence platform is an enterprise-grade solution that can be used for searching, decoding, indexing, and analyzing online data.
- 3. The device is a high-performance search engine based on unique capabilities of processing unstructured digital information and built upon Silk technology stack: agentless architecture that provides anonymous web surfing and harvesting via proxy servers.
- 4. It can extract and analyze HTML, XML, and JSON data from any Internet source or crawl internal resources to build full-text indexes. The access to the harvested data is provided by modules such as Search, CryptoCrawler (which enables automatic unblocking of password-protected resources), Batch Crawler (for bulk crawling), and other add-ons such as Analytics for graphical visualization. Custom add- ons can also be developed.
- 5. The Web Investigation platform is all about search, indexing, and processing of digital data stored both on-premise or in the cloud.
- 6. The product supports an efficient means of building aggregated structured indexes from raw unstructured data by discovering common patterns across multiple repositories so that they can be constantly updated for high recall.

At present, the solution provides extensive connectivity to various backend repositories including Azure Blob Storage, MS SharePoint, MS SQL Server, MS Exchange Server, and Oracle databases via ODBC/JDBC drivers. This makes it possible to easily extend existing data storage solutions with metadata catalogs created within the platform.

A range of powerful modules is available for further development of custom-made features: Data Refiner (for the transformation of data from heterogeneous sources), Batch Import (which allows loading of large volumes of documents while keeping system resources at an acceptable level), Crawler Cache Manager for optimization of Web Intelligence server performance.
- 9. The Web Intelligence platform is a complete solution for online investigation and detection of digital evidence. It can be used to search the deep and dark web, decode information from encrypted sources, investigate password-protected data, or analyzes internal data that was accidentally exposed on publicly accessible servers or via VPN connections.
- 10. The solution makes it possible to implement a secure workflow requiring approval by different levels of personnel before accessing confidential information without exposing private details about your business processes.
