Weathering breaks rocks down through physical or chemical processes. Mechanical weathering involves physical breakdown by freezing and thawing or abrasion. Chemical weathering involves chemical reactions, like iron reacting with oxygen and water to form rust. Erosion then transports the weathered material through wind, water or ice. Sediment is deposited when erosional agents can no longer carry the material, completing the weathering and erosion cycle.
