Weather 2014
The Caesarian calendar year starts from January and, except for the financial year which starts from
April, is regarded the world over as the starting of the official year. Obviously different cultures have
their own calendar year attuned to their cultural norms but these vary from culture to culture. But when
it comes to talking in terms of weather, everyone regards the beginning of Spring as the coming of a
new weather year.
In some parts of the world the changing of the seasons are not very prominent and some seasons are
more prominent than the others, while in some parts of the world the four main seasons are quite
prominent. The latter is the case in Germany.
In Germany you can distinctly see Nature changing with the season – trees start growing new leaves as
Spring glides in and everything becomes lush green and flowers start blossoming as Summer makes his
entry; Autumn then caresses the trees and their leaves turn red and start falling and Winter follows with
her frosty breath turning everything bare. You can see these changes in Nature and you are aware of the
season you are in. But not so much the weather.
Take this year for example. January and February is supposed to be the peak of Winter, it is supposed to
be freezing cold and snow is supposed to be covering the earth. But nothing of that happened. It was
not at all that cold and rather was quite warm for that time of the year. The coming of Spring was of
course visible with the sun showing his face a little more often and with a bit more regularity, but the
temperature did not change much. By the time it was supposed to be warm and sunny and the peak of
Summer – I am talking about June and July- everything was lush green and it was warmer than January,
but it did not feel like Summer. It was warm for only two weeks and the sun kept playing hide-n-seek
with the intermittent rains keeping the temperature sufficiently low to make going out without a jumper
quite impossible.
Now it is the beginning of October. Autumn is supposed to have begun a week and a half back. I know
the weather despises the man-made calendar and does everything in his power not to follow it but this
time he has outdone himself it seems. The leaves of the trees are turning orange and red and some of
them are fluttering to the ground, but the sun has decided to make his entry and make it unusually
warm for Autumn. I am not sure whether this is his attempt to make up for all the sunshine lost due to
his childish whim to play hide-n-seek or if this forebodes the coming of a dark and cold winter.
Before the tail starts wagging the dog and I forget what I had started off to say in the first place; even
though the four seasons can be seen quite prominently in Nature here in Germany this year it remained
just that, vis. something that can be seen. For someone who did not look at Nature this year it would
have felt like there was hardly any significant change in the weather except for a slight lowering of the
temperature here and a slight rise there. He or she would have hardly sensed the season from the
weather.
