Although we get many reference and evidence from
different sources of ancient Bengal the history of our
ancient Bengal is vauge and obscure. According to the
most historians, Ancient Bengal was filled with a lot of
wealth and resources.
Today our topic is wealth and resources of ancient
Bengal.
Wealth and resources is the main factor to mobilize the
family, society, and country etc. It is not only essential
for a indidual person but also for livelihood, cloth,
education and religious activities.

wealth and resources. These were –
5. The first step of producing wealth and resources was
agriculture. Ancient Bengal was a temperate region. The
condition of environment was very fine favourable and
suitable for agriculture. There were a lot of fellow lands. Less
than people lived there than we are today. They produced
less food products than we produce today. Most of the lands
of this area was fertile. Ancient Bengal was river oriented
area. There were a lot of rivers in this area. There were
different kinds of fishes in the area according to the Bengal
historian.

6. Firstly, most of the lands were under the
cruel land lord. They gave the pieces of land
to the poor farmers because of their
interest. For this farmers gave a part of
producing products or "Kazna" to the land
lord which was called natural form. The
most of hindust landlord gave their fertile
land to the most hindust religious person,
who were "Bramman".
That lands were more fertile then other
lands.
The main Agricultural products were paddy,
sugar cane, bamboo, coconut, betel leave,
betel nut and cultivating salt of ancient
Bengal.
7. Paddy was main crop of Bengal. According
to the reference, Lakkon Sen (the ruler
800-1300) granted many land to the
"Brahmana" where a kind of paddy named
"Shally" was cultivated. Besides these,
different kinds of proverb provide an idea
that there was produced different kinds of
paddy in ancient Bengal. Actually Ancient
Bengal was very congenial for agricultural
production.
Pundra, Bardawan was famous for sugar
cane cultivation. According to Ancient
Greek writer named "Allier and Lukan" a
lots of sugarcanes were produced in this
area.
8. In the coastal area salt cultivation was
popular. For this East India Company wanted
to grasp it. A lot of coconuts were produced in
the coastal area. Besides, Bamboo, Betel leaf,
Betel nut were produced.
Different kinds of spices such as colve, cumin,
malabadram, were produced in this area. That
kinds of products also were exported to West
Asia, Egypt, European countries and Roam.
Besides this, different kinds of dates were
produced in this area according to the book
named Khalimpur by Dharmapaul. Though
ancient Bengal was flourished with agri
products. Many times, it faced great natural
calamities such as famine, flood, river erosion,
cyclone.
9. Salt refinery, Carpas, fabrics were popular industry in this
area. Porter and black smith produced hous hold tools and
agricultural tools. Sugar industry was also remarkable
because it was exported to foreign country according to
Marko Polo.
We can assume from many documents and reference that
different kinds of ore such as iron, gold were remarkable in
this area.

10. Jute industry contributed marketing cloth
sack and other needs. In middle there were
many evidence of jute industry.
Naval and portal industry took a place of
industrialization of ancient Bengal what we
see now in Chittagong.
During the emperor Jahangir Khan there was
a diamond mine named Khokrok.
11. Spicy product like colve, cumin, malabadram were exported
to west Asia, Egypt, Europe and middle east county. Every
year a lot of fabrics and carpace were also exported. Special
Business man who were familiat named ‘Saodagor’ came to
this area for business from Iran, Egypt and different
countries.
