India ranks 87 out of 178 countries on Transparency International's 2010 Corruption Perception Index, down from 84 the previous year. Around 23 lakh children under age 5 die in India each year, with over 5000 children dying daily from hunger and malnutrition. Maternal mortality is also a major issue, with one woman dying every 7 minutes from pregnancy-related complications. There are estimated to be 13 million homeless people in India. The document also notes issues with government management and wasting of food grains, as well as challenges and opportunities for development in India.
