Whitney Houston was born in 1963 in Newark, New Jersey to a musical family that included gospel legend Cissy Houston. She showed an early talent for singing in church and began performing professionally with her mother by age 15. In 1983, she was discovered by record executive Clive Davis and spent two years working on her debut album. Her 1985 self-titled debut was a massive commercial success, making her a global pop superstar. In the following decades she achieved continued success with hit albums and soundtracks, including a cover of "I Will Always Love You" for The Bodyguard, which became her biggest hit. Houston struggled with substance abuse issues in later years and passed away in 2012 at the age of 48.
