A LEARNING EXPEDITION
An international gathering
at The Arches, Glasgow to
explore local and global
challenges.
Outcomes
To position Scotland on a global stage, promoting its pioneering SDS
legislation, one year on, allied to critical national policies in the push for
social change in health and care
To reinforce Person-Centred theory and practice within the lived
experience of disabled people and carers for greater choice and control
over their own lives
To have the opportunity, as a member of The Learning Expedition, to take
your Continuing Professional Development to a new altitude
To establish and unify, the strength of an International
Health and Social Care, Person-Centred
Leadership movement
Mission
To create a two and a half day international
gathering exploring the critical local and
global challenges faced in extending greater
choice and control to people over their own
lives. We shall come together to reframe
the way we think, inspire critical fresh
possibilities and solutions that reflect the
core vision and principles of the SDS Act.
‘We chose to climb’ will hear from more
than 30 compelling speakers from Scotland
and around the world, appearing on the
main and themed stages, giving timed talks
on associated SDS theory, research, lived
experience and innovative practice.
Audience
Taking place on the eve of the first anniversary
of the Social Care (Self-directed Support)
(Scotland) Act 2013, this gathering is expected
to attract several hundred Scottish and
international participants.
‘We chose to climb’ welcomes a range of
experiences and perspectives from leaders
who are individuals who use supports,
carers, practitioners, front line workers,
activists, connectors, researchers, managers,
commissioners and policy-makers.
Purpose
Exploring what actually matters to disabled
people; how people can lead fuller, healthier
and more active lives, discovering how to
respond with a mix of flexible supports
which people value. Utilising people's social
capital and community assets to reclaim
their independence and connectedness.
This gathering will reinforce the importance
of placing Person-Centred practice at the
core of what we do.
It will be a rare opportunity for those who
care about human rights, independent
living, social capital and person centred
practice to learn about how people in
different contexts are tackling similar
challenges within the world of SDS and 21st
century social care and health.
This isn't a typical conference. ‘We chose
to climb’ will be brought to life using the
creative metaphor of mountain climbing to
reflect the SDS vision and lived experience.
