This document is from a Wednesday Bible study on speaking the truth in love. It discusses how love rejoices in the truth and how speaking the truth builds maturity in Christ. It examines several Bible passages about speaking the truth, such as correcting others gently to save them from sin. However, it notes that words must come from a pure heart and be said in love to truly help people. The key is to listen, understand others, protect confidentiality, and speak truth for their good in a loving way.

Lesson 10 in a series on the Ten Commandments. This sermon on the ninth command was presented October 9,2011, at Palm Desert Church of Christ, by Dale Wells.
This sermon deals with a common and often under-emphasized abuse - Gossip. In this sermon I suggest that gossip is tool by which Satan twists our God-given impulses to build intimacy and share good news and distorts them into a sharing of news not worth sharing at the expense of others. It builds a fragile intimacy and does great harm to the Body of Christ.
Gossip is a weed that troubles and chokes God's beautiful garden, the church. We must create culture and develop self-discipline that keeps His garden weed free. This message brings a Scriptural perspective on the issue of gossip, slander, back-biting, tale-bearing and provides instructions on how to fight it.

Just because something is legal, does not mean it is right for a Christian. Many Christians have accepted Satan's lie that if it is legal, it is right for Christians.
Are we our “brother's keeper” or our “brother’s brother”? What is the difference? What ways may Christians "err from the truth"? What is our responsibility to a brother who has “erred from the truth”? (19-20) In what ways can you as a Christian "convert" another Christian? How is this "conversion" accomplished? How is the "conversion" of Christ in a sinner's life different from what James is describing in this passage?

The Book of Joshua is the sixth book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, and is the first book of the Deuteronomistic history, the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile.
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.
3. I Corinthians 13:6b
Love…rejoices with the truth.
Ephesians 4:15
Speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in
every respect the mature body of him who is the
head, that is, Christ.
Speak the Truth
4. Speak the Truth
James 5:19-20
My brothers and sisters, if one of you should
wander from the truth and someone should
bring that person back, remember this:
Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their
way will save them from death and cover over
a multitude of sins.
5. Speak the Truth
Proverbs 10:10
Someone who holds back the truth
causes trouble, but one who openly
criticizes works for peace.
6. Speak the Truth
Ephesians 4:15
Speaking the truth in love, we will
grow to become in every respect the
mature body of him who is the
head, that is, Christ.
7. James 3:8
But no human being can tame the
tongue. It is a restless evil, full of
deadly poison.
Speak the Truth
8. Matthew 12:34-35
You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil
say anything good? For the mouth speaks what
the heart is full of. A good man brings good
things out of the good stored up in him, and an
evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored
up in him.
Speak the Truth
10. Matthew 12:36-37
But I tell you that everyone will have to give
account on the day of judgment for every
empty word they have spoken. For by your
words you will be acquitted, and by your words
you will be condemned.
Speak the Truth
11. Proverbs 18:21
The tongue has the power of life and
death, and those who love it will eat its
fruit.
Speak the Truth
13. Proverbs 12:22
The LORD hates those who tell lies but is
pleased with those who keep their
promises.
Speak the Truth

Those who flatter their neighbors are
spreading nets for their feet.

N0n-truth: Gossip and Slander
Speak the Truth

If your brother or sister sins, go and point out
their fault, just between the two of you. If they
listen to you, you have won them over.
N0n-truth: Withholding the Truth
Speak the Truth
19. “Our postmodern world wrongly equates love with tolerance of all beliefs and
actions. But being tolerant of doctrinal error or unrepentant sin is not truly
loving at all.”
– Nathan Busenitz
Speak in Love
23. “More people fail for lack of encouragement than for any other
reason.”
– Ruth Graham
Speak in Love
24. Hebrews 3:13
But encourage one another daily, as long
as it is called “Today,” so that none of you
may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.
Speak in Love
25. SPEAK THE TRUTH IN LOVE
1. Speak the Truth.
• Be honest, no exaggerating, no lying, no flattery, no
gossiping, no slandering, let your yes be a yes.
• The HOLY SPIRIT must control our hearts for our WORDS
to be RIGHT.
2. Speak in Love.
• Think + Motive + Timing = Transformation
