2. Performance Expectations
6.PS.4.1 (Priority Standard)
Use diagrams of a simple wave to explain that (a) a wave has
a repeating pattern with a specific amplitude, frequency, and
wavelength, and (b) the amplitude of a wave is related to the
energy of the wave. State Assessment Boundaries:
Electromagnetic waves are not expected in state
assessment. State assessment will be limited to standard
repeating waves.
10. A wave is any disturbance that transfers
energy from one place to another!!
• Mechanical waves need
medium to move through.
Example sound and sea
waves.
• Electromagnetic waves
transport electromagnetic
energy example light energy, x-
rays, radio waves and
microwaves . They can move
without medium. They can
move through vacuum.
11. What is
vacuum??
• A space entirely devoid of
matter. It is an enclosed
space from which matter,
especially air, has been
partially removed so that
the matter or gas remaining
in the space exerts less
pressure than the
atmosphere
12. Mechanical
waves
• They need a physical medium to
pass through .
• A medium is a substance ( solid,
liquid, gas or plasma) that can
propagate energy waves.

• Explorers : Explain how sound wave move from one place to
another
• Researchers: Relate old phones to the idea that sound waves need
matter to move from one place to another
• Investigators: How can you prove that sound moves through gas?
