Water quality is a serious issue in many developing countries. Over 1 billion people lack access to clean drinking water and 2.4 billion lack basic sanitation facilities. By 2025, it is estimated that 48 countries will be affected by water scarcity issues. Major causes of water quality problems include water pollution, floods, irrigation practices, deforestation, and dam construction. Potential solutions that have been implemented or proposed include using wastewater for agriculture, installing low-cost hand pumps, protecting natural springs, building dry latrines, and promoting slower population growth.
