- We believe that China is probably the most important country for DDD2012 and Blue. Why? (continued on the next slide)
- China is so important because of its key position in the global economy and its high economic growth rate. The graph compares the GDP of China and the Netherlands over a period of roughly 20 years. As you can see, there has been a dramatic increase in China’s GDP since the early nineties, a growth which is simultaneous with the increasing importance of China’s role in the global economy. However, China has serious water management issues that are threatening this growth and more importantly, the global economy as well.
- Water pollution is a major issue in China, as approx. 1 in every 4 people in China consumes unsafe drinking water. This causes a wide range of illnesses, deaths and economic losses as well.
- Furthermore, the Chinese water shortage is also an extremely serious issue. By affecting the Chinese industry, it virtually affects the whole world. In case the Chinese government will not be able to solve this problem, global prices for virtually any consumer good will rise on an unprecedented scale.
- The gross economic losses resulting from the aforementioned water issues are estimated at a staggering 36 billion euros. In order to address these issues, the Chinese government is making huge investments. This is a great opportunity for the Dutch water management sector to enter the Chinese market.
- Unfortunately, the Chinese have a very outdated image of Holland. They believe that Dutch people are economically advanced, but lack technical innovation and creative approaches. By the means of the festival, the image of Holland needs to be updated in China in order to be able to profit from the tremendous investments that China is making in its water management systems right now.
- Water management students represent the future of the Chinese water industry. The best and brightest of these students will presumably proceed to become the next generation of executives and high-level technicians in the industry. Bearing this in mind, it is a top priority for the festival to engage these young individuals and to instill the idea of Dutch water management superiority in their minds.Otaku means a person with extensive interest in a specific subject (Water for example). Apple, for example, targets this group to introduce new devices. Furthermore, at some point Dutch companies might want to extend to China. In this case, the students who visited Blue will already know about the Dutch companies and will be more comfortable with working for them.
- If China was a democracy, one of the primary target groups would simply be the top managers of the main water industry firms. But we have to take into consideration the fact that in China the business world is not only private, each important post is coupled with a representative of the communist party unless if the owner of the post is already an important member of the communist party. For this reason, we think that one of the primary target groups should be the responsible of water management in China, which mean peoples who have an active role in the water management, and an influent position into the communist party.
