A substance that prevents blood from clotting by suppressing the
synthesis or functions of various clotting factors. Anti-coagulants are given to
prevent
 Deep vein thrombosis
 Pulmonary embolism
 Myocardial infarction
 Stroke

4. What is warfarin?
Warfarin is an oral coumarin anti-coagulant widely used to
control and prevent thrombo-embolic disorder.
Warfarin is clinically available as a racemic mixture of R and S-
warfarin. It inhibits coagulation by antagonizing vitamin-K.
