6. The Mist
It happens in some specific time. It is a ceremony. It is a ritual. It implants an idea in people’s head. The mist metaphors the future, the big M and the city map metaphor this city. When people feel lost in the mist, the
light of the big M make people believe this city will guide you to find a way out. The two ends of the big M are two entrances to the public swimming pool and the lobby of opera house.
In addition, the mist represent a subversive ideology. It reverses the relationship between matter and form, from “matter before form” to “matter after form”. It represents the infinite future.
The Public swimming pool
People can enjoy the beautiful city view in this swimming pool. When there is mist, it is like swimming above the cloud.
The folded wall
Because of the changeable weather and many strange buildings, my personal impression about Melbourne is she is a sensitive, emotional lady of whimsy.
These folds represent her emotions and her inspirations in her head.
The blue light represents the sea, the most original memory of Melbourne.
7. Color window
The golden yellow represent the prosperity of Melbourne originate from gold. The black part represent the city. I hope people worship
this city, I hope people believe this city can make their life better. In this building I hope people take this city as their faith. And I design a
high lobby space to salute to the St Paul’s Cathedral. When people look up to see the color shadow of color glasses, I hope people feel
the heaven is here.
8. AN INTERFACE SQUARE
A interface square next to the Yarra River.
A KNOT OF THE CBD GRIDS
The CBD grids end in my site. I hope people from
girds get together in the interface square.
A DEEP SPACE
I hope my building it is not just a building hiding
behind Federation Square. It is like a ladder,
represent the development and progress of
Melbourne. And these two buildings form a space
with foreground and background.
INCLINDED LOBBY SPACE
Slightly rotate the lobby space. So the square can
receive more light.
A LINK
It is a restaurant, from street view to river view.
A SHARED LOBBY
A lobby space to connect all functional space.
A SALUTE
Ues color window to salute to the St Paul’s Cathe-
dral that we cherish and believe.
A MIRROR
The sky is beautiful in Melbourne, it is hard to see such
a blue sky in some countries, such as China. So I use
metal to project this beautiful color on my building.

14. Break the Wall
What is freedom? You never escape from this earth just like you cannot escape from a prison. There will always be limitation. But why do you feel free on this earth? Because this world always
make you feel curious. How can we realize freedom architecturally? We need make our space say something to people. We need to use people’s curiosity to create the space. The wall is not
for stopping people, but for making them more curious. I want to say something to people by this building. Curiosity is freedom, curiosity is the drive to communicate. I will design space that make
people feel curious by deconstructing walls.

20. ENTRANCE
The entrance of pedestrians are close to the Smith St. It is
easy for people to find the circulation core. And the me-
chanical garage is next to the Little Smith St. It is a lane. To
avoid disturb people’s activities, I divide the two entrances.
INDEPENDENCE
I design this building as a vertical community. It is a relatively
independent system. People can live and work here. I try
to minimize the interference from each part, and integrate
them as a whole.
VERTICAL GARDEN
Generate vertical garden as public space. Establish vertical
connections between spaces.
SPLITTING
Split the vertical garden into two parts. One is for office, and
one is for residential part.
OFFSETTING
The garden for residential part move towards the Victoria
parade, and the garden for office move towards the sun.
GARDENS FOR VIEWS
Generate accessory gardens for people to enjoy different
views.

Co-housing and Co-apartment
There are several families in one unit. These
three families share a co-living room, a
co-kitchen, a co-dining room and a big gar-
den. I use vertical spaces instead of walls to
divide different families. These spaces create
more opportunities for people to communi-
cate, and interesting space will drive people
to use it. The design of private area will keep
the freedom and continuity of space. The
design of private area will keep the freedom
and continuity of space. I believe an interest-
ing space is helpful to establish a harmonious
relationship. And I believe a creative space
contribute to the new life style.

OVERLYING
Overlay the fragments of memory about the community by overlying representative materials of
the community to make people have empathy. At the same time, show the emotion of building
to people by the change of form. The fold, which seems like silk, on surface can be seen as a
relaxing expression of the building.

FOUR CONTINUOUS FUNCTIONAL SPACES
People begin at the knowing space. They can get some basic information about the 3D printing technology. Then people can learn how
to use 3D printer in learning space. And people can do their own research in mastering space. At last, people go down to the lawn to
share their knowledge in the sharing space.
26. GROUND FLOOR PLAN
VIEWS CHANGE AS MOVING
It is a traditional method of ancient Chinese to design gar-
den. Designer guide and organise people’s sight line, when
people in different location. So people will enjoy different
views when they move. 3D printer is an important part of this
design. When people on road, they can just see part of it,
which can make people curious. As people going into the
site, they will see the whole machine.
27. FIRST FLOOR PLAN
VIEWS CHANGE AS MOVING 2
The column can be seen as a
point, and two points form a
line. I use this principle to guide
the sight lines of people in dif-
ferent locations. So people will
see different views when they
are moving.

34. HERITAGE WALL
This picture shows the original wall . We can know the
material of the wall . I need to keep this wall . How to
address the relation between the new building and this
wall is significant .
LIFT THE WALL
Lift the wall to the first floor . So the ground floor can be
liberated for the circulation . Because the function of the
complex is complicated , the people stream would be
disorganised in ground floor . If the ground floor can be
expressly used for circulation , the space would be more
legible . The Caixa Forum designed by Herzog & De Meu-
ron is a good example .
CONTINUATION OF THE MARKET
The Queen Victoria Market is a historical building closed to
the site . There are so many people going out and coming
in the QVM everyday that we can not neglect the relation
between my building and the QVM . I expect to make
my building become the continuation of the market for
attracting people to going into my building .So the two
wall generate , and at the same time the heritage wall is
splited into two part .
REBUILD STREET
The picture below shows a typical street space for pedes-
trian in the QVM . When they feel tired in shopping , they
can sit down to drink coffee always and everywhere . The
coffee culture of Melbourne is very famous . so creating
such a space for drinking coffee is necessary . I want to
rebuild a aerial street between the lifted wall and the new
building . I think it is a combination of original material
and culture .
SMALL SCALE
The scale of the buildings across the Therry street is like
the picture below showing . I use some design techniques
to make the scale of retail space seem small . So the
new building can have a close relationship with the
original street .
DIVIDE PEOPLE STREAM
The people’s activity of different part is different . The
pace of residences and office workers are fast and their
activities concentrate on work time . However , shoppers’s
pace is slow and they may appear anytime in daytime
. So I divide these two kind of people into two parts to
avoid the different people streams being in a mess .
COMMUNICATION OF TWO SIDE OF
THE WALL
I design some big circle holes on the wall , so the space
of the street in the middle and the retail space can have
interaction . The picture below is the Ordos Art & City Mu-
seum of MAD Architects It shows an interesting sapce .
SMALL CITY
An architecture is a small city , and a city is an big architecture .
I want my building looks like a small city to symbolize this city .
FUNCTION
The complex is multifunctional . The upper part is apartment and
office , so I need to make these two parts be different . The apart-
ment need more sunlight relatively , so I design all apartments
can receive sunlight from the north . But the office face north and
south both .
VIEW
The end of different part face different directions . The green part
face the flagstaff garden , and the purple part face the Queen
Victoria Market . However the red part keep the sight line away
from three builings exceeding 100m.
SUNLIGHNT
I design a oblique plane in the green part which is an aerial gar-
den , so these two parts can receive more sunlight . And I also
design a oblique plane in the purple parts , so the space behind
them can obtain more sunlight . Finally , I design a indentation
above the biue part , so these parts can get more sunlight .

38. PROJECT IN WHI INTERNATIONAL 1
DALI MARRIOTT HOTEL
CONTRIBUTION: CONCEPT DESIGN AND DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAM: FIVE STAR HOTEL
YEAR: 2013.06-2014.02
LOCATION: DALI, YUNNAN, CHINA
39. Dali is located in a traverse mountainous area, with endless
hills and mountains. This becomes the initial inspirations for
the concepts. We use a rise and fall form for the architectur-
al roof to be an echo of the shape of the mountains.
Zhaobi, the screen wall, is a key feature in Dali local resi-
dences. We borrow this
architecture form and make abstract treatment, which
brings not only local architecture features into the building,
also rich feeling of modernisms.
The Three Pagodas in Dali are the landmark architecture
features. We hope that we can borrow some of their details
to make the detail rich with Dali local characteristics.
In Dali, local residences like to use green bricks to be a
surrounding frame for a white wall on the gable. We extract
the essence and reuse it in an
exaggerated way.
Make abstract treatment of the ditails of eaves as Dali local
architecture , so the hotel has both the characteristics of
the local building , and not copy the original form of local
construction .
