  4. 4. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glances Introduction ‫اﻝ‬ ‫ا اﻝ‬In this time and age, due to the shamelessness andimmodesty, which has spread through pornography, television, videos, internet, cell phones, cinema, novels, rgetc., so many peoples lives have been destroyed. Youngpeople have ruined their youth in illicit sexual intercourse .oand masturbation. Life-long marriages have been brokendue to unlawful love affairs. On a social level, society isplagued with problems such as rape, prostitution, child ahmolestation and pedophile, homosexuality, AIDS andother sexually transmitted diseases. The question arises as to what is the root of all these nqproblems. May Allah Taala reward our Mashaikh andpious predecessors, who look at the world with the eye of hathe heart, enlightened by the light of the Qur’aan, Hadithand the burning love of Allah Ta’ala. They have diagnosedall these sickness to be brought about by one deadly .kdisease. The root of all these problems is the SIN OFTHE EYES, casting evil glances, looking at the oppositeor same sex with lustful gazes. Unfortunately, today, wpeople do not even consider casting evil glances to be asin, when in actuality it is the root of innumerable viceswand sins.Another reality which people are totally unaware of is thatwby protecting ones eyes from lustful glances, one ispromised the taste of the sweetness of Imaan.Once the sweetness of Imaan enters the heart, it willnever be taken back. Thus by protecting the eyes, one isgiven glad tidings of a good death. Rasulullah said: 4 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  5. 5. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glances ‫ا ﻝ ای ﻥ‬ ‫م‬ ‫ﺱ ما‬ ‫ةﺱ‬ ‫ان اﻝ‬ ‫و‬ ‫ی‬ "Verily the evil glance is a poisonous arrow from the arrows of Iblees. He who abstains from casting evil glances, I will grant him such Imaan, that he will feel the sweetness of it in his heart". rg (Narrated by Ibn Mas’ud in Tabarani and Kanzul-Ummaal; Vol. 5, pg. 228), (Ibn Katheer; Surra Nur, Ayat 30) .oHafiz ibn Katheer ‫ہ‬ ‫ ر ۃ ا‬mentions in his Tafseer: ‫ﮦ اور ا ﻥ را‬ ah "He who protects his eyes from unlawful gazes, Allah Taala will grant him the light of the heart." nqWe ask Allah Taala that He makes this booklet a meansof exposing the reality of this destructive disease and that haHe guides the entire Ummah from the darknesses of sininto the light of piety and obedience to Allah Taala andRasulullah . May He make it a means of eternal .kreward for our Shaikh, Hazrat-e-Aqdas Moulana ShahHakeem Muhammad Akhtar Saheb ‫ﮩ‬ ‫ , دا‬who hasdevoted his entire life to purification of the Nafs, w ‫اﻝ‬ ‫اﻝ وف وﻥﮩ‬ ‫( ا‬enjoining good and forbiddingevil). May He accept it out of His sheer Mercy.w Amenw 5 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  6. 6. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glances Harm No. 1: Disobedience of AllahCasting evil glances is clearly forbidden by the ‫ﻥ‬clear and explicit text of the Quraan. Allah Taala says: ‫ره‬ ‫ا‬ ‫ا‬ ‫ی‬ ‫ﻝ‬ rg“O Nabi Tell the believing men to lower some of their gazes." (Sura Nur ; Ayat 30, Juz 18) .o(Meaning, do not look at ghair mahram women andhandsome boys). Therefore, he who casts evil glances isopposing the clear and explicit command of Quraan, and ahone who opposes the clear and explicit command ofQuraan is guilty of committing a HARAAM act. Thus, to nqsave oneself from this sin, it is sufficient to meditate uponthe fact that the one who casts evil glances is opposing acommandment of the Qur’aan. In other words, he is hadisobeying Allah Taala. .k Harm No. 2: Breach of TrustThe one who casts evil glances is breaching the trust of wAllah Taala. Allah Taala says:w ‫ور‬ ‫اﻝ‬ ‫و‬ ‫ا‬ ‫ﺥ‬ ‫ی‬w "He knows the mistrust of the eyes and that which the hearts conceal." (Sura Mumin; Ayat 18, Juz 24)Allah Taala uses the word ‫ ,ﺥ ﻥ‬which means to commitmistrust. This indicates that we are not the owners of oureyes rather we have been entrusted with them. This is the 6 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  7. 7. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glancesreason why suicide is forbidden, because we are notowners of our bodies. Allah Taala has entrusted us withour bodies. Since they are a trust from Allah Taala, to useit against His pleasure, to harm it or to put an end to it isforbidden. If we were owners of our bodies then perhapswe would have the right to use them the way we desire.By not giving us the choice and freedom to utilize our rgbodies, the way we desire is the proof that this is a trustfrom Allah Taala. To embezzle this trust of Allah Taala isa great crime. The one who casts evil glances is .obreaching and embezzling the trust of sight which AllahTaala has granted him. The breacher of this trust cannotbecome the friend of Allah Taala. How beautifully a poethas said: ah nq haThe "thief of sight" can never have the crown of friendship placed upon his head He who is not a Muttaqi, is not a Wali .k Harm No. 3: Curses From Nabi wwThe one who casts evil glances is cursed by Nabi .wNabi says in a Hadith mentioned in Mishkaat Shareef: ‫ر اﻝ‬ ‫واﻝ‬ ‫ا اﻝ‬ ‫ﻝ‬ "May the curse of Allah be upon the one who casts evilglances and upon the one who presents him/herself to be looked at." (Mishkaat; Pg. 270) 7 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  8. 8. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil GlancesIf casting evil glances was a minor sin, then Nabi ,being a mercy to mankind would not have cursed itsperpetrator. The curse of Nabi is clear proof that thisis a very despicable crime. The meaning of curse is tobecome distant from the mercy of Allah. Imam RaghibIsfahani mentions in Mufradaatul Quraan that thedefinition of ‫( ﻝ‬curse) is: rg ‫اﻝ‬ ‫اﻝ‬ .o "To become distant from mercy."Thus, he who has become distant from the mercy of Allah ahTaala, cannot gain salvation from the evils of his Nafs.Only he who is under the shade of Allahs mercy canattain salvation from the evils of the Nafs. Allah Ta’ala nqsays: ‫رة ﻝ ء‬ ‫ان اﻝ‬ ha The Nafs abundantly commands evil.” (Sura Yousuf; Ayat 53, Juz 13) .kSo how is it possible to be saved from the evils of Nafs?Allah Ta’ala further says: w ‫ر‬ ‫ر‬ ‫ا‬w “Expect by the mercy of my Lord.”wFrom this, we understand that the only way to be savedfrom the evils of the Nafs is to come under the shade ofAllah’s mercy. Allah Ta’ala who is the Creator of this NafsHimself has proclaimed that those who are in His mercywill be saved. Therefore, the one who has come underthe shade of ‫ر ر‬ ‫ ا‬his Nafs did not remain ‫ا رة ﻝ ء‬(excessively commanding evil) rather it became ‫ا رة ﻝ‬ 8 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  9. 9. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glances(abundantly commanding good). This is why after thecommand of guarding the eyes, ‫ا ره‬ ‫ا‬ ‫ , ی‬AllahTa’ala mentions, ‫ا وﺝ‬ ‫“ وی‬Guard the private parts.”Because through the blessings of fulfilling the divinecommand of Allah Ta’ala and saving oneself from thecurse of Nabi one comes under the shade of Allah’smercy. Now his private parts will also be safeguarded. rgForm this we conclude that the reward of guarding theeyes is that the private parts become safeguarded. On the .ocontrary, if a person does not guard his eyes then hecannot guard his private parts either and curses whichdescends upon him is a separate punishment on its own. ah Harm No 4: An Action of Stupidity nqHazrat Hakeem ul Ummnat Thanwi ‫ہ‬ ‫ ر ۃ ا‬said: ha"Every sin is a sign of stupidity and foolishness. Anyonewho commits sin, then this is a sign that there is somedeficiency in his intellect. He is disobeying such a Being .kin whose hands is our life and death, our health andsickness, peace and comfort, good and evil end. If hisintellect was sound he would never commit sin. As for the wone who casts evil glances, Hazrat says that he isextremely foolish. By casting glances, he attains nothingwother than restlessness in his heart. By looking at abeauty, one never attains him/her, rather one getswuneasiness and the heart becomes restless when oneremembers him/her. Allah Taala has granted me a newaspect of knowledge. To cause inconvenience to anyMuslim or to bother him in any way is HARAAM. Now thatperson who is casting evil glances, is he not a Muslim? Ishe not causing pain to himself and making his own heartrestless? Therefore, the same way it is forbidden to cause 9 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  10. 10. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glancespain and harm to any Muslim, it is likewise forbidden tocause pain to ones own heart by making it restless anduneasy. Harm No. 5: Causes Pain to the Heart rgIf someone says that we accept that the heartexperiences grief and sorrow when looking at beauties, .obut grief and sorrow is also felt when protecting the eyes.A person feels regret in his heart saying, "O how prettythat face may have been." So what is the difference? One ahwill be causing pain to the heart either way, by lookingand not looking. The answer to this is that the painexperienced by looking at the beauty is more severe than nqthe pain felt when guarding the eyes. When a personcasts evil glances at any beauty then one comes to knowof her shapes and features. "Her eyes are like this, her hanose is like that and she has a model face..." This grief istermed as "grief of known and recognized beauty" whichis more severe and causes more restlessness and .kuneasiness in the heart. However, if one guards his eyesthen this will be "regret of unknown and unrecognizedbeauty." When a person does not look, then the regret, wpain and grief will also be light and minimal. The effect ofthis pain and grief will fade away quickly. The sweetnesswof faith which one attains from the regret of not attainingwthe "unknown and unrecognized beauty" will be soenjoyable that it will surpass all the combined enjoymentsof the world. On the other hand, by casting evil glancesand making oneself go through regret and grief of "knownand recognized beauty," the anger and wrath of AllahTaala descends. As a result of this, the heart becomesrestless and uneasy. One does not have a moment of 10 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  11. 11. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glancescontentment in the heart and life also becomes bitter. Therefore, there is a world of difference between the twopains. One is a world of mercy and the other is a world ofcurses and wrath. The difference between the two griefsand pains is like the difference between Paradise andHell-fire. Hence, the command of lowering the gaze is agreat favour of Allah Taala upon the believers. By making rgus go through the pain of "unknown and unrecognizedbeauty," He saved us from the pain of "known andrecognized beauty." Just like the example of a person .owho gets stung by a mosquito and another gets bitten bya snake. The one who got stung by the mosquito thanksAllah Taala that he did not get bit by the snake. Similarly, ahthe pain and regret of guarding the eyes from"unrecognized beauty" is like the stinging of a mosquito,And the pain and regret of "known and recognized nqbeauty" is like the biting of snake. ha Harm No. 6: Weakness of the Heart .kBy casting evil glances, the thought of that beautycontinuously comes into the heart and mind. Through this, the heart is in a continuous struggle and conflict which wcauses the heart to become weak and sickly. The curse ofcasting evil glances is that along with the eyes, the fivewsenses and the entire body becomes agitated.wIn the commentary of the verse: ‫ن‬ ‫ی‬ ‫ان ا ﺥ‬ "Indeed Allah is fully aware of what they do."Allama Alousi ‫ہ‬ ‫ ر ۃ ا‬explains this verse in his Tafseer 11 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  12. 12. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil GlancesRuhul Ma’ani under four headings: 1. ‫ ﺝ ﻝ اﻝ‬Allah is aware of how you turn your eyes around to cast evil glances. 2. ‫اﻝ اس‬ ‫ ﺱ ل ﺱ‬The one who casts evil glances uses all five senses. By using the sight, he tries to look at the unlawful beauty, rg he uses his hearing to listen to her an unlawful voice, he uses his lips to try to get an unlawful kiss, through his touch he desires to caress .o the beloved, through his sense of smell he wishes to smell the beloveds fragrance. 3. ‫اﻝ ارح‬ ‫ی‬ ah Allah is fully aware of the movements of all the limbs. Allah is watching how he uses his hands, legs and other limbs nq in order to obtain his beloved. Whereas the perpetrator is totally unaware that Allah Taala ha is watching his every move. 4. ‫ی ون اﻝ‬ Allah Taala is fully aware of his .k final aim and that is fornication. This is actually an informative sentence that has a warning concealed in it, that is: w "I AM FULLY AWARE OF YOUR EVERYw MOVE. IF YOU DO NOT ABSTAIN, THEN THERE WILL BE SEVERE PUNISHMENT!"wThus, in this verse there is an indication that he will bepunished if he does not repent. Casting evil glances is thefirst stage towards fornication and illicit sexualintercourse, in which a person becomes shameless, makes himself naked and then humiliates and degrades 12 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  13. 13. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glanceshimself in both worlds. This is why Allah Ta’ala forbadethe very beginning stage of casting evil glances. Theexample of this sin is like an escalator whichautomatically takes a person to the final stage, as soon ashe puts his foot on the first step. That action whosebeginning is evil, what can be expected of the end result?I have a couplet concerning this: rg .o All the stages of the love of idols, end in sin ah How can that thing, which begins with evil, ever end in goodness? nqDue to the fact that all the limbs and five senses of theone committing evil glances becomes agitated, and the haheart becomes involved in a continuous struggle for filthyand evil motives, the body and heart of such a personbecomes weak and sickly. .k Harm No. 7: Medical Harm wwOne physical harm of casting evil glances is that theurinary bladder becomes swollen due to which a person iswcompelled to repeatedly urinate. Harm No. 8: Premature EjaculationBy casting evil glances the sexual desires increase due to 13 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  14. 14. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glanceswhich the heat and temperature of the body rises. This inturn, makes the semen thin and watery by which a persongets the sickness of premature ejaculation. Such a personis unable to property fulfil the rights of his wife due towhich their marital relations and eventually their family lifeis destroyed. rg Harm No. 9: Ungratefulness .oCasting evil glances brings about ingratitude within theheart. When a person is looking at so many faces and ahfeatures then his own wife does not remain attractive tohim. Hence, he becomes ungrateful thinking to himselfthat he did not get a good-looking wife. And if she is good- nqlooking, then he thinks to himself that she could havebeen more beautiful. That woman which appears moreattractive to him than his own wife, then even if his own hawife is beautiful, she is still not as attractive as the otherwoman. In this way, he is becoming ungrateful of Allahsfavors. As for the one who guards his eyes out of Allahs .kfear, and does not look at other women, than even if hiswife is not so beautiful, she is still attractive to him and inthis manner he remains grateful to Allah for this favors. ww Harm No. 10: Weakness of EyesightwBy casting evil glances, a persons eyesight becomesweak. This is because by guarding ones gaze, one isfulfilling gratitude for the blessing of sight and the rewardof gratefulness is the increase of blessings as it ismentioned in the Quraan Shareef: 14 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  15. 15. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glances ‫زی ﻥ‬ ‫ﻝ‬ "If you are grateful then We will most definitely increase you in blessings." (Sura Ibrahim; Ayat 7, Juz 13)Casting evil glances on the other hand is ingratitude andthe punishment of ingratitude is severe, as is mentioned rgin the Qur’aan Shareef: .o ‫ﻝ ی‬ ‫ا‬ ‫ان‬ ‫وﻝ‬"And if you are ungrateful then know that My punishment is severe." ahHarm No. 11: Distance from Allah Ta’ala nqThe greatest reward one attains by guarding the eyes is hathe special closeness of Allah Ta’ala. Guarding the eyesfrom Layla is a means of attaining Maula. This is becauseguarding the eyes makes the evil desires of the heart to .kbleed and when all four corners of the heart become redby shedding the blood of regret, then from every horizonof the heart the sun of the closeness of Allah will rise. I whave a couplet concerning this:ww The redness of the blood of unlawful desires, Becomes a horizon from which the sun of closeness to Allah Taala rises. 15 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  16. 16. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil GlancesI have some more couplets on this subject: Through the wound of regret have I adorned the heart, Only after this have I attained Him. rg .o By guarding my heart from these beauties, I have gone through much pain and grief. ah nq The station of closeness to Allah cannot be attained so ha easily, Only after a thousand wounds of regret is it attained. .kIf a person would realize how distant he becomes fromAllah Taala by casting evil glances then he would nevercast evil glances. The example of this is like that heart wwhich is directed towards Allah Taala at 90 degrees andwthen casts evil glances. That very same heart turns 180degrees away from Allah Taala. The heart which waswdirected towards Allah Taala turns away from Him andbecomes directed towards that beauty. Every moment theheart becomes occupied with thoughts of that rotting anddecaying corpse. The heart is destroyed by thesethoughts and many people have even died an evil death. 16 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  17. 17. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glances Harm No. 12: Heart AttackCasting evil glances could eventually lead to a heartattack. This is because the heart becomes occupied in acontinuous struggle. The beauty pulls the heart to him/herand Allahs fear pulls the heart in its direction. Throughthis struggle and pain, a person eventually gets a heart rgattack because this internal conflict causes the heart toincrease in size. If he would have protected his gaze then .ohe would not have been caught up in this internal struggleand he would not have had a heart attack. ah nq Salman wants for himself a Salma One should not give his heart to any stranger haBy giving ones heart to just any stranger leads to having .ka heart attack. However, one should take note of the factthat there are many causes of a heart attack. Therefore, aperson should not have the misunderstanding thatanyone who has had a heart attack was involved in wcasting evil glances. One should take special care and bewcautious of this in the case of pious people. One shouldhave a good opinion of them. We have been commandedwto have a good thought and opinion of every Muslim. In short, one should not have an evil thought and opinionconcerning anyone. Rather one should worry aboutoneself. Ponder over this harm that if I cast evil glancesthen it will eventually lead to a heart attack. 17 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  18. 18. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glances Harm No. 13: Sexual Desires are ArousedBy casting evil glances, the sexual desires are inflamedand incited. If a person does not attain the beauty whomhe was casting evil glances at, then he will fulfil hisinflamed desires by committing illicit sexual intercourse rgwith anyone he gets a hold of, even if he/she is ugly. Heinflamed his desires by looking at a beautiful face and .osatisfies this desire by having illicit sexual intercourse withsomeone with an ugly face. He casted evil glances out ofgreed for beauty and ended up degrading himself with ahsuch an ugly person that one cannot stand to even look ather/him. Casting evil glances is such an evil act that doesnot leave you until it takes you to the final stage of sin nqwherein a person does not even see beauty anymore.Guarding ones private parts after casting evil becomesimpossible. This is why after ‫ا ره‬ ‫ا‬ ‫( ی‬the hacommand of lowering the gazes) Allah Taala reveals ‫ا وﺝ‬ ‫( وی‬to guard the private parts). .kFrom this we see that by protecting the gaze the privateparts also become protected, and if the gaze is notguarded then the private parts also do not remain secure wfrom sin.w Harm No. 14: Leads to MasturbationwCasting evil glancing causes the seminal fluid to come outof its place. And once the semen leaves its place then itcannot go back. The semen cannot reverse like a car.Just as in the case of a goat or cows udder it cannot goback, because the udder is a place of discharge not 18 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  19. 19. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glancesintake. Similarly semen cannot go back into its place afterbeing released. It has to be discharged one way or theother, whether it be lawful or forbidden. The curse ofcasting evil glances is such that a person does not remainconscious of lawful or unlawful. He will either fulfill his lustby having illicit sexual intercourse with some women ordegrade himself by committing sodomy with some man or rgyoung lad.If he does not get any man or woman then he will fulfill hislust by masturbating. Just as it is unlawful and forbidden .oto commit sexual intercourse with a strange man orwoman, it is likewise forbidden to masturbate.Unfortunately, this sin has become widespread in this day ahand age. In some narrations of Hadith there are severewarnings against this sin. It has been mentioned that theperson who masturbates shall be resurrected on the Day nqof Judgment with a pregnant hand. It has also beenmentioned that the ‫اﻝ‬ ‫( ﻥ‬the one who masturbates) is haunder the curse of Allah. Fulfilling ones sexual desires inan unlawful manner is obviously impermissible. But oneshould also be cautious of excessive permissible sex. Too .kmuch sexual intercourse spoils the health and drainsones strength. Spiritually, one does not get enjoyment inworship and Zikr. If also causes the child to be born weak wand frail. It is for this very reason that our pious eldershave advised to preserve the semen. After 15 to 30 dayswwhen there is a strong urge to have sex, only then shouldone fulfill ones desire. The lion copulates once a year andwfrom that it breeds offspring. Similarly, those people whohave intercourse after long intervals of time producestrong and healthy children. Therefore, moderation isnecessary in sexual relations with ones wife, otherwiseexcessive sex can even lead to death. My Shaikh, HazratPhoulpoori ‫ہ‬ ‫ ر ۃ ا‬narrated to us the incident of an 19 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  20. 20. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil GlancesAlim who had a very beautiful wife. Whenever he wouldcome home from running errands and would see his wife, then he would not be able to control himself. He usedhave so much sexual relations that after six months, instead of discharging semen, blood started to ejaculatefrom his penis. This eventually led to a severe fever afterwhich he died. Beauty was the cause of his death. This is rgwhy I advise to have moderation in permissible things aswell. As for the unlawful, then my advice is not to even gonear Haraam. May Allah Taala grant us the ability to .opractice upon what has been said. Amen ah nq ha We regard as cursed those joys Due to which O friends, my Sustainer is displeased. .k www 20 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  21. 21. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glances The Cure to Casting Evil Glances By Hazrat-e-Aqdas Moulana Shah Abrarul-Haq Saheb ‫ہ‬ ‫ر ۃا‬My Shaikh and mentor, Moulana Shah Abrarul-Haq rgSaheb ‫ہ‬ ‫ ر ۃ ا‬has formulated some very importantguidelines for protecting the gaze. I will present them .ohere. Read them once daily with the intention ofreformation. The harms of evil glances are so numerous thatsometimes ones Deen and worldly life are both ahdestroyed. The evil effects of this spiritual disease arespreading rapidly nowadays. Accordingly, it seems nqappropriate to mention the cure and remedy to all theharms which have been mentioned. Consequently, onecan protect ones gaze by adhering to the following hapractices: 1. When women are passing by, keep the gaze .k low no matter how much one has an urge to look. If your gaze accidentally falls on someone, immediately lower it no matter how w difficult it is, even if there is fear of losing your life.ww 2. Perform a minimum of two Rakaats for every evil glance and also give some money in charity according to your means. Repent excessively. 3. Completely abstain from intermingling with the opposite sex or anyone to whom one is 21 http://islamicbookshub.wordpress.com/
  22. 22. Fourteen Harms of Casting Evil Glances sexually attracted to. 4. Do not read love poems or novels. Abstain completely from cinema, television, videos, unnecessary "surfing" on the Internet and all pornography. rg 5. Stay away from the environment of nudity and disobedience. Do not adopt the company of those who are involved in the disobedience of .o Allah.By practicing the above mentioned guidelines, Insha- ahAllah, your Nafs will come under control. In this way youwill be cured of the love of all beings other than Allah.Your heart and soul will perceive such rewards that will nqbring ecstasy to your soul all the time.
