Web 2.0 refers to websites that facilitate information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design and collaboration on the World Wide Web. Key characteristics include allowing users to do more than just retrieve information by running applications through a browser. Popular Web 2.0 technologies include social media sites, blogs, wikis, tags and syndication feeds that enable users to both consume and produce content. While Web 2.0 boosted participation and user-generated content, some critics argue the term does not represent a new version of the web, as these collaborative features predated the Web 2.0 label.
