This document presents research on improving tool life and surface finish during dry turning of Al 7075 alloy by supplying liquid nitrogen to the cutting zone. Liquid nitrogen was supplied through a nozzle directed at the tool-workpiece interface. Experiments were conducted using uncoated tungsten carbide tools under varying cutting speeds, feeds, depths of cut, and cryogenic conditions. Results showed that supplying liquid nitrogen reduced average surface roughness by over 30% and doubled tool life compared to dry turning. The nitrogen also lowered the cutting temperature and led to the formation of elongated chips. Therefore, the use of liquid nitrogen during turning enhanced machining performance for Al 7075.
