1. VOLLEYBALL
LESSON ONE
Equipment needed: 25-30 soft volleyball sized balls
Safety: Students must stay on their feet and must walk after any ball in the air.
Skills: Overhead volley (set)
The set: The player begins by forming a
“triangle” with the index fingers and thumbs held
touching and the fingers spread wide. This creates
a “window” through which the player looks as the
ball approaches from above. The ball is pushed
or hit with the fingertips back into the air.
Activities: Each student has a ball and an area to him/herself.
[1] The ball is tossed low and caught using the “window” just above the forehead.
If 3 low tosses can be caught in a row a high (“monster”) toss may be attempted.
If the ball is not caught the 3 low catches are repeated. Time: 1 minute
[2] The set: Each student practices the set. If the student can toss, set, and catch three
low sets in a row then a low toss/high ‘monster” set may be attempted. Balls that
are not caught result in the three low sets being repeated. Time: 1 minute.
[3] How many sets in a row can you make without missing?
[4] Using the nearest wall the ball is thrown low and set off the wall. If three low sets
are caught high (monster) sets may be attempted.
[5] How many sets in a row can you make off the wall before missing?
With partners: Partners find a space free from intrusion from other groups.
2. [1] Each partner underhand throws (“granny” throws) 5 balls to their partner’s head
who sets the ball back. The catches are counted. Time: 1 minute.
[2] This activity is repeated with the goal of becoming an ”expert.” An expert is a player
who can set the ball back to the thrower so that it is caught at least 4 times out of
the 5 tosses. When both partners are experts the partners may set the ball back
and forth without catches trying for as many in a row as possible.
[3] Teams of four: first in line is the first “captain.”
Captain tosses the ball to the first person in line
who sets the ball back to the captain who must
catch the ball. The setter goes to the end of the
line. When the captain has caught 10 he/she goes
to the end of the line and a new captain gets a
new ball and repeats the sequence until time runs
out or all balls have been used.

Equipment needed: 25-30 soft volleyball sized balls
Safety: Students must stay on their feet and must walk after any ball in the air.
Skills: pass (bump)
The pass or “bump”: The player begins
by joining the hands in some manner.
Simply grasping the fingertips of one
hand to the other and pointing them to
the floor creates an ideal contact area
on the mid-forearms. The arms are
held stiff and should NOT be raised
3. Activities: Each student has a partner and a ball but works individually
[1] The pass: Each student practices the pass. If 3 consecutive low bumps can be
caught then high (monster) bumps may be attempted. If the ball is not caught the
student must repeat the low bumps. Time: 1 minute
[2] How many consecutive bumps can you make?
[3] Wall passes: players toss the ball off the wall and bump the ball off the wall to be
caught. How many catches can be made in one minute?
[4] How many consecutive passes can be made off the wall?
[5] Partners toss 5 underhand throws to their partner’s “abs” (stomach muscles).
The partner bumps the ball back. Time: 1 minute.
[6] Partners attempt to become bump experts (5 in a row). When both are experts the
team tries to bump as many in a row as they can.
[7] Relays:
a) Each partner must run to the nearest wall and hit one successful pass off the
wall, catch it, and return home. When all four walls are done the ball is
exchanged for a more difficult ball. This continues until time runs out or until all
balls have been used.
b) Using the partners who advanced the furthest or finished first as taggers repeat
the relay with teams attempting to complete the job without being tagged. If
tagged a player must return home and his/her partner must repeat that wall.
LESSON THREE
Equipment Needed: 25-30 soft volleyball sized balls
Safety: Never run after a ball in the air, stay on feet
4. Skills: Serve
Skill: Underhand Serve: The server
stands sideways to the target with the ball
held close to the waist with the non
-serving hand. The ball is struck with the
open palm or closed fist of the serving
hand as it swings forward pendulum style.
Activities: Each student with a ball and a spot to themselves near a wall.
[1] Students serve the ball off the wall as many times as possible. Time: 1 minute.
[2] Students begin one step from the wall. Students serve the ball off the wall with an
underhand serve. Each time the ball reaches the wall at the desired height the
player steps back to serve again. Time: one minute.
[3] Students serve the ball as high as possible off the wall. Can you serve the ball off
the wall and then bump or set it?
Partners:
[1] Partners serve the ball back and forth as many times as possible. The receiving
partner tries to catch the ball. Time: 1 minute
[2] Partners serve to each other from a distance of 10’. For each serve that is safely
caught both partners step back one step.
[3] Partners who have caught 10 serve and bump or set the ball back to the server.
Teams of four:
[1] Teams form straight lines with the first player in line the “captain” who steps
ahead of the group 10’. Team members take turns serving to the captain. When
10 catches have been made the team moves to the net with a new captain.
[2] When ten catches have been made a new captain trades the old ball for a more
difficult ball and the process is repeated.
[3] When a team has made 5 catches the “captain” must set or bump the ball back
to the server.
Game: Clean out your backyard: Even teams on either side of the net. A large number of
5. Balls are placed on either side of the net. Players must clear their side of the net by
serving as many balls as come onto their side of the net. The team with the fewest
balls on their side wins.
* Variation: Allow each team to place 3 bowling pins on the other side of the net. The
game lasts one minute. Every ball must be served with the intention of knocking down
the other team’s pins.
* Variation: Place a cart or bin on either side of the net. Each team serves balls on their
side over the net and into the container. The team with the most balls gets choices for
the next game: move their container closer or your own further away.
LESSON FOUR
Equipment Needed: 2 bins, 25-35 soft volleyballs, net
Markings: 30’ circle
Safety: Players are to stay on their feet.
Skills: Set, pass, serve
Activities: Target Practice: Teams of four+ are
Stationed at a folding mat near the wall. Each team
has 6 balls. On command teams begin by standing
and opening the folding mat so that it creates an
enclosure against the wall. Once done the team
takes turns serving the balls into the container.
The team has one minute to see how many balls
can be served into the container.
Game 2: Using one ball the team takes turns
serving at the enclosure. When a serve goes in it
is retrieved by the server and the team moves
back to the next line. How far back can your team
make it?
Game 3: Teams have 6 balls. When all 6 are served

Lesson Five
Equipment needed: 1 volleyball trainer, boingo ball, beach ball, net
Floor Markings: Position markings
Skills/Concepts: Scoring, rotation
Safety: Players must stay on their feet. Players that fall must sit out the next point.
SCORING: The serving team is the only team that can score. If the receiving team wins
the point it is “side out.” That is: they are awarded the serve. A ball landing in or on the
7. line is considered good. The last team touching the ball before it lands outside the court
(including hitting the wall) loses that point. A ball may played off the net. (Strict rules state
no player may touch the net or cross the center line. You may wish to waive this rule for
the sake of continuity.) Three hits per side is another rule you may choose to keep or
discard. The first team to reach 15 points by a margin of at least 2 wins the game.
*Rally Scoring: This is an optional method. Either the serving or the receiving team can
score a point on any serve. Each team serves 3 consecutive serves regardless of the
outcome of the point. (This will eliminate the dominance of any one server.) The first team
to reach 15 leading by a margin of at least 2 wins the game.
ROTATION: A Server continues to serve until the receiving team wins a point and the
serve. With each subsequent “side out” the receiving team rotates to the next highest
number with the player who is on the largest number returning to #1. This puts all players
in a new position and brings up a new server.
*Number 7 is usually designated as our server. Players may move forward if needed to be
successful.

8. *Servers who win three consecutive points must serve from further back.
*Teams that lose by a lopsided score may be given some options for the next game:
1] the other team is given fewer chances to return the ball.
2] no one handed shots under any circumstances
3] There is NO out of bounds for the team
