Reed became the youngest-ever winner
of a WGC event at 23 years, seven
months and four days, beating Woods'
mark from his first WGC win back in
1999 by 26 days.
Despite taking his third career win,
Reed was still in the shadows of
Woods as the 14-time major champion
was once again troubled by a back
injury, putting his Masters preparations
in jeopardy.
Reed was in control for most of the
final round before some late flutters,
but his bogey on the final hole and
score of even-par 72 for a four-under
total was enough for a one-shot victory
over Welshman Jamie Donaldson (69)
and American Bubba Watson (68), the
only other players in red figures.
He earned a mammoth $US1.53 million
($A1.7 million) in prize money.
"I believe I have proven myself, Reed
said."
"I was hitting the ball so well this week
and my putting was outstanding."
Donaldson was the only real challenger,
but a bogey on the final hole cost him
his chance at victory.
Woods started the day three off the
lead and in the penultimate pairing but
struggled to a six-over 78 - the first
time he has failed to birdie a single
hole in a final round - as he finished at
five-over in a tie for 25th.
Scott Hend was the leading Australian
at four-over following a final round 71
and tie for 16th.
World No.2 Adam Scott's 73 put his
challenge for the top spot in the
rankings on hold for at least another
two weeks, leaving the Queenslander
tied with Woods at five-over.

The first time an amateur golfer goes
to the course, he is probably
accompanied by luck, bagging a few
early pars and birdies. Luck has been
an important factor offering a newbie
the feeling that this game is the one for
him. In this game a newbie shares the
same opportunities as an experienced
player.
It is luck that may make a marvelous
day for a golfer and send him to cloud
nine. But it's the absence of luck that
could drown him in despair, misery and
anger.
This has made luck the dearest friend
of any golfer, but an inconstant,
unreliable one. When most in need, this
unfaithful friend often disappears, then
shows up again out of the blue.
It's difficult to describe the pride and
happiness of a hole-in-one, backed by
luck. But where is this friend when the
prize for a hole-in-one is a luxury sedan
in a tournament?
Looking at a golfer happily smiling on
the green or receiving a trophy after a
tournament, we know that in addition to
practice and talent, luck has played an
important role.
Even the world's greatest golfers need
luck. This has proven to be true time
and again at the Masters. The history
of the Masters is one of the extremes
of joy and despair. For several leading
golfers luck has made the difference.
Several shots have become the most
memorable.
'The more I practice, the luckier I get."
It's still controversial whether Gary
Player, Arnold Palmer or Ben Hogan
made the above comment, but at the
end of the day, its wisdom is greater
than whoever said it.
None of us are born to be lucky. If you
want luck, you need to pull up your
sleeves and work hard for it.
Luck has for a long time been
a close friend to golfers,
especially amateurs, but most
of the time, this friend gives
you nothing but the cold
shoulder. Thanh Vu has more
to share.

25. CHIP-SHOT WITH ROBERT BICKNELL
24 VietnamGOLF
Robert Bicknell, the first golf professional
in Vietnam, has been working here for 21
years. He was twice coach of the Vietnam
National Golf Team for two SEA Games
competitions.
Greg Norman once said, "I'd rather be
lucky than good."
This is interesting because in his case
he was lucky in business and good on
the golf course. Of course there are
ways to increase your luck by being
better prepared and by being in the
right place at the right time. In
business, Norman did everything to
increase his chances of being lucky,
but this didn't quite follow him on the
golf course - especially in majors.
Some people claim that a Hole-in-One
(HIO) is 99 percent luck and only one
percent skill and I have to strongly
disagree with this for the simple
reason that you have to hit the shot in
the general direction of the hole in
most cases.
The actual odds of you making an HIO
is 5,000 to one according to different
sources. Some claim that if you play
5,000 rounds of golf you should make
at least one HIO. But these odds are
very different if you are targeting a
specific hole on a specific day - such
as trying to win a Mercedes Benz
during a tournament, your odds blow
up to something like 28,000 to one.
What irritates me a bit is that most
tournaments here in Vietnam
disqualify local pros from winning the
prize because we're pros. They fail to
make the distinction that we are
mostly teaching or administrative
pros, not Tour pros. Therefore, our
From the sublime to the ridiculous, when
talking about golf, it's almost impossible
to take luck out of the equation. Robert
Bicknell cast his eyes over the odds and
tries to work out if it all stacks up.
Dumb Luck

on-course skills are not razor sharp anymore.
Yes, we can hit it in the direction of the flag, but
we can also occasionally shank the hell out of it
too. It really depends on the amount of beer
involved. They also fail to remember that we are
often forced to play from the back tees - you
know, the ones in another district. Well at least
they let us play in the first place.
Earlier, I said skill is involved - mostly - but it's
important to recognize that the operative word is
"most", because HIOs also come in some of the
most ridiculous ways.
For example, I have seven HIOs to my credit and,
of those seven, only three were actually decent
shots. The other four were blind, dumb luck. This
included a shank which struck a tree, then a rock
before rolling onto the green and into the hole. I
was almost ashamed to claim it, but, hey, take
them where you can, right?
Two others which were memorable for their
ridiculousness included my very first when I was
13 years old - a 1-iron to a blind green 220
yards away. When we couldn't find it on or behind
the green, someone suggested half-jokingly to look
in the hole. And there it was.
I have
seven HIOs
to my
credit and,
of those
seven, only
three were
actually
decent
shots. The
other four
were blind,
dumb luck.
The other ridiculous shot was at Thu
Duc (VGCC) on the East Course's third
hole. I actually got into a shouting
match with my caddie (the legendary
Ms Kim Chi). I wanted to hit the
pitching wedge and she was adamant it
was a 9-iron. She actually refused to
give me the club, so I hit the 9-iron and
into the hole it went.
She was smirking and my pride was
wounded, so I retorted: "I would have
been closer with the wedge!"
Golf is a ridiculous game even on its
best days, so you have to learn to
accept it for what it is. Some days you
will hit perfect shots and score terribly.
Other days you will hit terrible shots
and score well.
Then you have the infrequent days when
you hit perfect shots and score well.
This is an aberration and should be
discounted immediately as a freak
occurrence where certain planets,
moons and stars coincidentally aligned
for a brief moment while you were
playing.
Here in Vietnam, probably one of the
luckiest golfers is Le Xuan Phuong (aka
Tiger Phuong) who has more HIOs than
I can count. When I was with VGCC he
had already dropped four into the cup -
with witnesses. During those days, the
club would reward members with
money as well as a trophy and other
prizes.
Tiger always donated the bulk of the
money to a children's hospital or other
similar charity and I always suspected
this was why he was able to keep
making HIOs on a regular basis,
obviously the Golf Gods were smiling
down on him.
If he kept the money and crowed about
it, he might not have made another one
ever. Such is the nature of the game.
Personally speaking, I find making an
albatross - Double Eagle for the US
players - much more difficult. To do so,
you have to hit two really good shots to
even have a chance at it. It's much
more demanding than an HIO, which
explains why there are so few of them.
But that's a story for another day.
