In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
Vestavia Hills Receives Smart Government Award 6.7.10
1. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE CITY OF VESTAVIA HILLS RECEIVES SMART GOVERNMENT
HONOR FROM REVENUE DISCOVERY SYSTEMS (RDS)
The Library in the Forest provides a destination for learning
and an environmental showcase
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – June 7, 2010 – Revenue Discovery Systems (RDS) announced
today that its 2010 Smart Government Award recipient in the Mid-size Municipality
(population 15,000 to 50,000) category is the City of Vestavia Hills, Ala., for providing
the state’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified public
library. The awards recognize municipalities, counties and state agencies that are taking
innovative steps to enhance growth, create cost savings and provide environmental
benefits.
RDS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Portfolio Recovery Associates, Inc. (Nasdaq:
PRAA). For more information, please visit www.revds.com.
In response to a long-range strategic plan in advance of the city’s projected population
growth, the Vestavia Hills Mayor and City Council identified the current library as an
inadequate public facility. In response, the mayor and council authorized a $4 million
challenge-grant to the private sector that would be matched dollar for dollar by the city to
fund the state-of-the-art library project.
The Library in the Forest, the new LEED-certified public library, will be an
environmental showcase and classroom on 9.4 acres of lush Alabama forest. Only two
acres will house the 36,000-square-foot-library. The remaining area will be an example of
environmental stewardship including nature trails, an arboretum, and science education
stations for the Vestavia Hills school system. The Library Foundation, the Library Board
and the City Council hope the library will be a partner in the quality education of
Vestavia Hills’ children and continuing education for adults and provide a lesson in
sustainable construction and operations to library patrons and visitors from neighboring
cities and states.
“Vestavia Hills is pleased and honored to have been selected for the Smart Government
Award,” said Mary Lee Rice, council president. “This award recognizes projects with an
eye toward energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, and the Library in the
2. Forest certainly fits those criteria. We are grateful to RDS for this recognition, and we
invite our friends from around the state to visit the library when it opens in September.”
Only 25 percent of the trees will be removed and, of those, 80 percent will be recycled
into furniture and furnishings for the library. Patrons will feel like they are connected
with the outside environment with the use of natural light and other natural resources.
The Library in the Forest focuses on the patrons, accommodates new technology,
(more)
recognizes the evolution of the “collection” of books, and emphasizes the social role of
the library.
“What a unique and different approach to learning and environmental stewardship,” said
Kennon Walthall, president of RDS. “The Library in the Forest is a one-of-a-kind facility
that highlights the city’s focused approach to growth. It’s an honor to present the Smart
Government award to the City of Vestavia Hills and its officials.”
The nominations for several different categories were approved and awarded by a
committee comprised of educators, a policy researcher, an environmental conservationist,
and a retired municipal employee. Those committee members included: Dr. Don-Terry
Veal, executive director of the Center for Governmental Services, Auburn University;
Tommy Pow, program manager at the University of Alabama College of Continuing
Studies; Jim Williams, executive director of the Public Affairs Research Council of
Alabama; Mike Moore, former revenue officer for the City of Opelika; and Adam
Snyder, executive director for Conservation Alabama.
About the Smart Government Awards:
The Smart Government Awards were developed by RDS to recognize innovative
governments and efficient programs in Alabama. The Approval Committee evaluated
nominees based on efforts to enhance growth and reduce waste in spending, time and
resources, particularly in regards to the environment.
