Vermont digital newspaper project: From reel to real Presenter: Tom McMurdo, University of Vermont In June 2010, the University of Vermont (UVM) Libraries was awarded funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to support the Vermont Digital Newspaper Project (VTDNP) as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) developed by NEH and the Library of Congress. The Project has selected, digitized, and made available nearly 130,000 pages of Vermont newspapers published between 1836 and 1922. The digitized newspapers are freely available to the public via the Library of Congress' Chronicling America database. The UVM Libraries work collaboratively with partners at the Vermont Department of Libraries in Montpelier, and the Ilsley Public Library in Middlebury, who form the core of the Project planning and management group activities. Presenters will give an overview of VTDNP from planning stages and implementation, to creation of metadata and the transformation of microfilmed newspapers into online searchable content.

In 2012 the Keepers Registry compared the eJournal holdings from Columbia, Cornell, and Duke to seven preservation agencies and discovered that only 22-27% of titles were preserved.[1] Influenced by the Keepers Registry study, Columbia and Cornell Universities (2CUL) secured funding for a project to specifically evaluate strategies for expanding eJournal preservation. The responsibility for and the initiative to preserve electronic journal content is neither clear nor easy, and knowing the preservation status of an eJournal is not currently a basic step within the NASIG Core Competencies for Electronic Resources Librarians life cycle of electronic resources management. This presentation will highlight the methods and strategies for expanding eJournal preservation developed as part of the Mellon Foundation supported project at 2CUL. A significant focus of the presentation will be on inspiring electronic resources librarians at a breadth of libraries and institutions to integrate these methods and strategies for preservation into the day-to-day workflow of electronic resource management. A wide range of eJournal categories are evaluated within the scope of the project including: content direct from publishers, small and society publishers, open access eJournals, full-text content in databases, and university generated eJournals. Attendees will learn techniques for identifying at risk eJournals, integrating preservation into license negotiation with publishers, tracking the preservation status of eJournals, and developing relationships with existing preservation agencies. The quality of future of scholarship and teaching hinges on the preservation of the scholarly record. [1] Burnhill, Peter. Towards a Quality Assessment of Web Corpora for Language Technology Applications

In this study, we focus on the creation and evaluation of domain-specific web corpora. To this purpose, we propose a two-step approach, namely the (1) the automatic extraction and evaluation of term seeds from personas and use cases/scenarios; (2) the creation and evaluation of domain-specific web corpora bootstrapped with term seeds automatically extracted in step 1. Results are encouraging and show that: (1) it is possible to create a fairly accurate term extractor for relatively short narratives; (2) it is straightforward to evaluate a quality such as domain-specificity of web corpora using well-established metrics.

Li Chen & Ravi Sahita In this talk, we juxtapose the resiliency and trustworthiness of composition of DL and classical ML algorithms for security, via a case study of evaluating the resiliency of ransomware detection via the generative adversarial network (GAN). We propose to use GAN to automatically produce dynamic features that exhibit generalized malicious behaviors that can reduce the efficacy of black-box ransomware classifiers. We examine the quality of the GAN-generated samples by comparing the statistical similarity of these samples to real ransomware and benign software. Further we investigate the latent subspace where the GAN-generated samples lie and explore reasons why such samples cause a certain class of ransomware classifiers to degrade in performance. The automatically generated adversarial samples can then be fed into the training set to reduce the blind spots of the detectors. There has been a surge of interest in using machine learning (ML) particularly deep learning (DL) to automatically detect malware through their dynamic behaviors. These approaches have achieved significant improvement in detection rates and lower false positive rates at large scale compared with traditional malware analysis methods. ML in threat detection has demonstrated to be a good cop to guard platform security. However it is imperative to evaluate - is ML-powered security resilient enough? To generate reliable traces of system activity, we can utilize CPU-based telemetry such as Intel Processor Trace which can be extracted via a hypervisor without guest instrumentation. We advocate that file I/O events extracted from Intel processor trace together with algorithmic improvements have shown potential stronger defense in ML -based model deployment in the wild to combat ransomware attack. Our results and discoveries should pose relevant questions for defenders such as how ML models can be made more resilient for robust enforcement of security objectives.

This presentation will describe the infrastructure (feature catalog, constraints management, database, etc.) surrounding the use of FME at NRCan and it will also present some interesting validation and spatial data management solutions.

Lensfield is a desktop and filesystem-based tool designed as a “personal data management assistant” for the scientist. It combines distributed version control (DVCS), software transaction memory (STM) and linked open data (LOD) publishing to create a novel data management, processing and publication tool. The application “just looks after” these technologies for the scientist, providing simple interfaces for typical uses. It is built with Clojure and includes macros which define steps in a common workflow. Functions and Java libraries provide facilities for automatic processing of data which is ultimately published as RDF in a web application. The progress of data processing is tracked by a fine-grained data structure that can be serialized to disk, with the potential to include manual steps and programmatic interrupts in largely automated processes through seamless resumption. Flexibility in operation and minimizing barriers to adoption are major design features.

Invited talk at MIT CSAIL, March 8 2016 Information extraction (IE), the task of extracting structured information from unstructured or semi-structured data, is increasingly important to a wide array of enterprise applications, ranging from Business Intelligence to Data-as-a-Service. Such applications drive the following main requirements for IE systems: accuracy, scalability, expressivity, transparency, and customizability. SystemT, a declarative IE system, has been designed and developed to address these requirements. It is based on the basic principle underlying relational database technology: complete separation of specification from execution. SystemT uses a declarative language for expressing NLP algorithms called AQL, and an optimizer that generates high-performance algebraic execution plans for AQL rules. It makes IE orders of magnitude more scalable and easy to use, maintain and customize. SystemT ships today with multiple products across 4 IBM Software Brands. Furthermore, SystemT is used in multiple ongoing research projects and being taught in universities. Our ongoing research and development efforts focus on making SystemT more usable for both technical and business users, and continuing enhancing its core functionalities based on natural language processing, machine learning, and database technology.
