Jesus teaches his disciples about the cost of true discipleship. He uses several analogies:
1. One must be willing to "hate" their family and even their own life in order to follow him.
2. Disciples must be willing to take up their cross, as Jesus did, and follow him no matter the personal cost.
3. Becoming a disciple requires careful consideration, as in building a tower or going to war, to count the full cost and ensure one is able to finish.
4. Just as a king would not go to battle without assessing his strength against the enemy, one must surrender fully to Jesus' lordship to be his disciple.
