Identification of the benefits of wikis (and blogs) for internal information sharing and as collaborative work spaces in libraries and library organizations. Demonstration of several library wikis that use MediaWiki, pbwiki, and Wikispaces as their platforms and show how simple it is to create pages and edit content. Attendees will also see a few examples of blogs that serve similar purposes.
For over five years Antony Williams has been delivering presentations to chemists about how to utilize freely available websites to help create an online presence. Over the years he has presented on LinkedIn for a professional CV, ResearchGate for sharing papers and research updates, FigShare for data, and a myriad of other tools for developing an online profile. The stable of web-based platforms that can be used continues to expand. However, with only so much time available to share publications, presentations, data and activities how does a scientist shortcut their way to understanding what is available and the benefits of use? This presentation will provide an overview of what is available and the potential benefits of investing a small amount of time in developing an online profile especially as an increasing number of potential employers and collaborators utilize the web to research scientists. The discussion will extend into the developing world of alternative metrics and will help you understand how the uses of these new measures. Participating online, whether it be simply for career advancement or for wider exposure of your research, there are now a series of web applications that can provide a great opportunity to develop a scientific profile within the community. This session will emphasize the importance of how collaborative learning works and expectations for those who engage in wiki group learning and staff development. By demonstrating the ease of a wiki and sharing current examples of wikis in advising practice, participants will gain resources and ideas to bring back to their campus. Contributing to the global commons: Repositories and WikimediaNick Sheppard
There is huge potential for universities and their libraries to leverage Wikimedia in order to expose research outputs and collections. Wikimedia comprises sixteen projects in total, including Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. At the University of Leeds, the Research Data Management Service have successfully run a project that focuses on linking research data with the Wikimedia suite of tools via a series of ‘editathons’, in order to increase the visibility of research data and enable reuse on Wikipedia and elsewhere. The project - "Manage it locally to share it globally: RDM and Wikimedia Commons" - was the winning submission to a competition launched in May 2018 and sponsored by SPARC Europe, Jisc and the University of Cambridge, called the "Data Management Engagement Award", which aimed to address cultural challenges involved in promoting effective research data practices.
The project has served as a springboard to further explore Wikimedia strategically, both at the University of Leeds and across the White Rose Consortium. For example we are collaborating on a new project looking at Wikipedia citations of research from York, Sheffield and Leeds, and the proportion of these that are open access. The long term goal might be to establish a "Wikimedian in Residence" across the consortium. In this talk, we will present the project's outputs - including a toolkit that will enable other institutions to apply the same methodology. In addition we will explore the potential of Wikidata to link up repositories and other data silos in a manner that enables reuse and increases impact.
This presentation addresses the practical and pedagogical benefits of wiki use. It also shows the contexts in which wikis can be useful and highlights a number of great wiki sites in each of these contexts.
A wiki is free, functional and fabulous. This presentation will reveal how a wiki-centric classroom can easily be developed to provide a constructivist tool for collaboration, communication, publishing, presentation and assessment. Topics covered include the nuts and bolts of setting up a wiki, ideas for classroom use and best practice use of wikis internationally. The Edublog 2006 award winning wiki “Flat Classroom Project” will be featured along with a discussion of how to integrate Web 2.0 tools into the wiki environment.
