Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599-1660) was a leading Spanish painter during the reign of King Philip IV. He traveled to Italy twice and served as the premier painter of the Spanish royal court. Some of his most important works include portraits of members of the Spanish court and scenes depicting historical events like battles and coronations.
