While a business in theory can expand,
should it?
Maya and fellow Xoogler Ted McCarthy
meld philosophies to unpack this
question in a recent collaboration. Read
it here.
🌍 The TL;dr, there’s no formula for going
global, in fact the copy-paste method
usually fails (the piece includes some
great examples). Designing for a market
requires deep understanding of a locality
— its cultural norms, social structures,
power systems, and institutions.
Localization has no proxy.

Measurement, the helm of influence
Metrics are often a fraught topic cross-
functionally, yet they can be a unifying
force in product development when we
create space for understanding and
alignment. Recently, we worked with a
$6B enterprise product that lacked a
measurement story. We developed a
flexible framework centered around
Health, Excellence and Value (HEV) that
leverages anecdotal and directional
data as an entry point to determine
product development priorities.
Naturally, this flywheel decisively uses
research and design to maintain
momentum.
