SYSTEM
VECOM®
is an inductive communication system at the basis of many vehicle
stop and central unit functions. VECOM®
is an abbreviation of ‘Vehicle
Communications’, referring to transparent information exchange between mobile
vehicle equipment and stationary equipment along the route .
VECOM®
is used to exchange data between vehicle equipment and roadside
equipment. Vehicle identification is used for priority requests at intersections,
automatic or manual point control changing, route tracking, punctuality and
regularity calculations, reporting in and out at passenger stops and vehicle
localization and registration.
Priority requests based on vehicle identification
A pre-configurable priority request is submitted to a traffic light controller system.
With VECOM®
, it is possible to add the vehicle status in comparison to the
timetable to this request. This enables using conditional priority, meaning that the
vehicle is given priority only when necessary.
Automatic point changing
A pre-configurable priority request is sent to a switch point control device using
vehicle identification. The vehicle data (ID, line number, run number and more) is
sent from the vehicle to the VECOM®
- CT system which determines the required
point position. This ensures that the switch points are set to the required position
automatically and well in advance, allowing for the vehicle to continue without
any delays. Driver entered requests can also be send to the point machines if
required.
Vehicle registration
The roadside equipment can register the identification details and time of passing
vehicles. This function is a highly effective tool for analysing and improving service
levels. Furthermore, this function is essential to run travel information systems
effectively, including Compact Bus Stations.
Smooth and predictable traffic flow for trams and buses is
an essential requirement. It is crucial to provide passengers
with minimal waiting times and smooth operations. For
transport companies looking for optimal services and efficient

-CT Features
VECOM®
-Compact is the latest generation of VECOM®
roadside
systems with the following properties:
ƒƒ Limited footprint thanks to 3 compact 3 HE modules;
ƒƒ A RS485 serial channel for connecting to an intelligent
roadside system or via the VETAG serial protocol;
ƒƒ An extra RS485 serial channel for controlling additional
digital communication or an extra connection to a central
system;
ƒƒ A RS232 serial channel for diagnostics, configuration and
downloading software;
ƒƒ New VECOM®CT Loop Transceiver with excellent noise
cancelling features;
ƒƒ Extensive parallel input and output possibilities;
ƒƒ From and to passing vehicles;
ƒƒ From and to linked central systems;
ƒƒ Extensive, configurable 19 bit VETAG code conversion;
ƒƒ The entire VECOM®
function is configurable, including the
type radio link modulation. This gives greater flexibility and
enables completely adjusting the function without any
changes to the hardware;
ƒƒ All software, including modulation and filtering algorithms,
can be downloaded via the serial port.
Further benefits in combination with the “Loop Transceiver”
(VECOM®-CT) are:
ƒƒ Improved diagnostics (including detection of a dead loop);
ƒƒ Improved insensitivity to EM noise, which allows the unit to
better handle environments with a high level of EM noise
(including Light Rail);
ƒƒ Possibility of bridging longer distances (up to 1000 m
between the loop and VECOM®
-CT unit).

Technical specifications
Software functions ƒƒ VECOM identification information from the vehicles can
be send to TSC or central systems and can be decoded by
the VECOM-CT system for up to 200 relay output control
table entries.
Serial channels ƒƒ When detecting a vehicle, an entry and/or exit vehicle
alert is reported.
Power supply ƒƒ AC: 176 VAC < U < 253 VAC / 50Hz / 1A.
ƒƒ DC: 22,8 VDC < U < 25,2 VDC / 1,3A (For integration
into other equipment, the VECOM®
-CT system can also
be connected to an external 24 VDC inlet).
Interfaces ƒƒ 3 Communication Channel; 3 Communication 1 x RS232
(service channel) and 2 x RS485 compatible. 1200, 9600
or 19200 bps half duplex, VCU protocol (in accordance
with ISO1745) or VETAG serial output. The second RS485
channel can be used for controlling parallel inputs and
outputs or to connect an additional central system. Please
note: A distance up to 1 km is possible by adding a SERIO
module.
ƒƒ Synchronisation: Via the synchronisation interface, the
VECOM®
-CT can be synchronised with the interface of
other VECOM®
systems.
ƒƒ Parallel inputs and outputs: A maximum of 4 x I/O 1609
modules can be connected on the VECOM®
-CT units. This
allows for making a large number of inputs and outputs
available. The Relais contacts are at 1 kVDC isolation
voltage. Contact current 0.5 mA < I < 100 mA, Contact
tension 3.0 V < U < 50 V.
ƒƒ Diagnostics: By means of LED’s and via the service channel
(RS232).

ƒƒ Loop buffer: 235 x 131 x 56 mm (lxbxh), IP67

Vecom wayside system

  • 2. VECOM® is an inductive communication system at the basis of many vehicle stop and central unit functions. VECOM® is an abbreviation of ‘Vehicle Communications’, referring to transparent information exchange between mobile vehicle equipment and stationary equipment along the route . VECOM® is used to exchange data between vehicle equipment and roadside equipment. Vehicle identification is used for priority requests at intersections, automatic or manual point control changing, route tracking, punctuality and regularity calculations, reporting in and out at passenger stops and vehicle localization and registration. Priority requests based on vehicle identification A pre-configurable priority request is submitted to a traffic light controller system. With VECOM® , it is possible to add the vehicle status in comparison to the timetable to this request. This enables using conditional priority, meaning that the vehicle is given priority only when necessary. Automatic point changing A pre-configurable priority request is sent to a switch point control device using vehicle identification. The vehicle data (ID, line number, run number and more) is sent from the vehicle to the VECOM® - CT system which determines the required point position. This ensures that the switch points are set to the required position automatically and well in advance, allowing for the vehicle to continue without any delays. Driver entered requests can also be send to the point machines if required. Vehicle registration The roadside equipment can register the identification details and time of passing vehicles. This function is a highly effective tool for analysing and improving service levels. Furthermore, this function is essential to run travel information systems effectively, including Compact Bus Stations. Smooth and predictable traffic flow for trams and buses is an essential requirement. It is crucial to provide passengers with minimal waiting times and smooth operations. For transport companies looking for optimal services and efficient operations, VECOM® technology can be a key tool.

VECOM® -CT Features VECOM® -Compact is the latest generation of VECOM® roadside systems with the following properties: ƒƒ Limited footprint thanks to 3 compact 3 HE modules; ƒƒ A RS485 serial channel for connecting to an intelligent roadside system or via the VETAG serial protocol; ƒƒ An extra RS485 serial channel for controlling additional digital communication or an extra connection to a central system; ƒƒ A RS232 serial channel for diagnostics, configuration and downloading software; ƒƒ New VECOM®CT Loop Transceiver with excellent noise cancelling features; ƒƒ Extensive parallel input and output possibilities; ƒƒ From and to passing vehicles; ƒƒ From and to linked central systems; ƒƒ Extensive, configurable 19 bit VETAG code conversion; ƒƒ The entire VECOM® function is configurable, including the type radio link modulation. This gives greater flexibility and enables completely adjusting the function without any changes to the hardware; ƒƒ All software, including modulation and filtering algorithms, can be downloaded via the serial port. Further benefits in combination with the “Loop Transceiver” (VECOM®-CT) are: ƒƒ Improved diagnostics (including detection of a dead loop); ƒƒ Improved insensitivity to EM noise, which allows the unit to better handle environments with a high level of EM noise (including Light Rail); ƒƒ Possibility of bridging longer distances (up to 1000 m between the loop and VECOM® -CT unit). Please note: A distance up to 1 km is possible by adding a SERIO module. ƒƒ Synchronisation: Via the synchronisation interface, the VECOM® -CT can be synchronised with the interface of other VECOM® systems. ƒƒ Parallel inputs and outputs: A maximum of 4 x I/O 1609 modules can be connected on the VECOM® -CT units. This allows for making a large number of inputs and outputs available. The Relais contacts are at 1 kVDC isolation voltage.
