how to digitise images and
use photomedia in your design
practice while managing the
photo assets and the processes
for creating them.

What is Digital Design?
Digital Design is an creative work
practice that uses digital computer
technology as an essential part of
the creative or presentation process.
Since the 1970s, various names have
been used to describe the process
of including computer generated
imagery and multimedia imagery in
digital art and design processes.
Digital design is a term used to describe a wide variety of
computer related skills including fields such as web design,
digital imaging and 3D modeling. The term can be further
expanded to any digitally created visual media. Digital
advertising and web designers use the technology to develop
commercial work while artists use the same mediums to
express themselves creatively. Amassing skills in digital design
is paramount to a designer finding employment in their
chosen field.
There are countless types of digital design. The most
common use of the term refers to graphic and web design
that includes digital imaging, coding, animation, interface
design, and more. Digital imaging ranges from the creation
of simple navigation graphics such as buttons and arrows,
all the way to complex photo doctoring and the creation of
artistic imagery from scratch. Furthermore, designers expand
their skills to animation to create dynamic visuals that move
organically to bring their imagery work to life.
Digital designers also create animations and 3D models for
Hollywood movies, architectural planning, and the design of
product prototypes.

What is Photomedia?
Photomedia is a photographic
asset used for visual art and design
purposes. It may be a simple
untouched photo or it may be an
image that has been manipulated to
change its appearance in any way.
The photo may have been captured
through traditional or digital
photography or by a scanner.
Photomedia focuses on a full range of photographic visual
art practices that make up contemporary digital design.
Photomedia emphasises conceptual and practical
investigations through projects designed to foster
individual interpretations and aesthetic development, and
to promote the acquisition of technical skills and enhance
your engagement with research. Photomedia encompasses
traditional and digital photography as well as image capture
by scanning.
We will be focusing on the capturing and digitising of images
as well as the application of creative explorations to into
commercial outcomes.

Photo imaging, as it relates to graphic design
practice, is unique in the expression of design
ideas. In this course you will develop valuable
knowledge and experience in digital asset
management, image manipulation, digital
imaging work flow management and the
preparation of digital artwork.
You are encouraged to challenge your ability
and grow in the medium, to try new ideas, and
to communicate using the language of this
medium, and to appreciate ideas and trends in
photo-media for graphic design.
