"May Day Eve" is a short story written by Filipino National Artist Nick Joaquin. Written after World War II, it became one of Joaquin's “signature stories” that became a classic in Philippine literature in English. Together with Joaquin's other stories like The Mass of St. Sylvester, Doña Jeronima and Candido’s Apocalypse, May Day Eve utilized the theme of "magic realism" long before the genre was made a trend in Latin American novels. Published in 1947, it is a story originally intended for adult readers, but has later become a required and important reading material for Filipino students.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL QUIZ
2. VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL QUIZ
‘X’ and ‘Y’s story is an ancient tale of desperate love. “X’ fell deeply in love with and
married ‘Y’, a beautiful nymph. They were very much in love and very happy together.
Aristaeus, a Greek god of the land and agriculture, became quite fond of ‘Y’ and
actively pursued her. While fleeing from Aristaeus, she ran into a nest of snakes which
bit her fatally on her legs. Distraught, ‘X’ played such sad songs and sang so
mournfully that all the nymphs and gods wept. On their advice, ‘X’ travelled to the
underworld and by his music softened the hearts of Hades and Persephone (he was the
only person ever to do so), who agreed to allow ‘Y’ to return with ‘X’ to earth on one
condition: he should walk in front of her and not look back until they both had reached
the upper world. In his anxiety he forgot that both needed to be in the upper world, and
he turned to look at her and she vanished for the second time, but now forever.
Can you identify both the ‘X’ and “Y’?
3. VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL QUIZ
This eternal love story is based on an Arthur Brooke
poem. The Montagues and the Capulets—the two
families at the center of the family rivalry makes this
story. The writer makes the heroine a thirteen-year-old
girl when she goes to be with the hero. The source for the
story’s English verse was the translation of the Italian tale
‘Mariotto and Gianozza’ which was first printed in 1476.
While writing this story, it's believed that the writer
introduced some 3,000 new words to the English language.
Name this all time famous love story.
4. VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL QUIZ
‘X’ and ‘Y’s love story is one of four traditional Punjabi folk tales with
Sohni Mahiwal or Suhni Mehar, Sassi Punnun and Mirza Sahiban.
There are several poetic narrations of this story which was written by
Waris Shah in 1766. Some historians say that the story was the
original work of Shah, written after he had fallen in love with a girl
named Bhag Bhari. Others say that ‘X’ and ‘Y’ were real personalities
who lived under the Lodi dynasty in India of the 15th and 16th century
and that Waris Shah later utilised these personalities for his novel.
Identify ‘X’ and ‘Y’.
5. VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL QUIZ
The true love story of ‘X’ and ‘Y’ is one of the most memorable, intriguing and
moving of all times. The story of these two historical characters had later been
dramatized by William Shakespeare and is still staged all over the world. They
fell in love at first sight. The relationship between these two powerful people put
the country of Egypt in a powerful position. But their love affair outraged the
Romans who were wary of the growing powers of the Egyptians. Despite all the
threats, they got married. It is said that while fighting a battle against Romans,
‘X’ got false news of ‘Y's death. Shattered, he fell on his sword. When ‘Y’

You have to identify both ‘X’ and ‘Y’.
6. VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL QUIZ
22 years old Silver-screen heartthrob ‘X’ married relatively
unfamiliar Krishna Malhotra who was his father’s maternal uncle’s
daughter. She was a quiet and conservative person. This is the reason
she remained behind-the-scenes all the time. That’s why, ‘X’ had an
affair with ‘Y’ for 7 years which became the folklore of the celluloid
world, but refused to marry her. ‘X’ had famously said that his wife
was the mother of his children but ‘Y’ was the mother of his movies.
Name both ‘X’ and ‘Y’.
7. VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL QUIZ
This eternal love story passed from Arabic to Persian, Turkish
and Indian languages, most famously through the narrative poem
composed in 584/1188 by the Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi. Lord
Byron called it "the Romeo and Juliet of the East."
Name this all-time favourite love story.
8. VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL QUIZ
This is a story about partners in love and science. Unable to continue
her studies because universities did not admit women, ‘X’ travelled to
Paris in 1891 to attend the Sorbonne. Known by the French name, she
spent every spare hour reading in the library or in the laboratory. The
hard-working student caught the eyes of ‘Y’ who was the director of
one of the laboratories where ‘X’ worked. ‘Y’ ardently wooed ‘X’ and
made several marriage proposals. They were finally married in 1895
and began their famous love and scientific partnership.
Identify ‘X’ and ‘Y’.
9. VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL QUIZ
‘X’, the son of an emperor fell in love with an ordinary but beautiful
courtesan ‘Y’. He was mesmerized by her beauty and fell in love as soon as he
saw her. But the emperor could not digest the fact that his son was in love
with an ordinary courtesan. He started pressurizing ‘Y’ and devised all sorts
of tactics to make her fall in the eyes of the young, love smitten prince. When
‘X’ came to know of this, he declared a war against his own father. But the
mighty emperor's massive army was too much for the young prince to
handle. He gets defeated and was sentenced to death. This is when ‘Y’
intervenes and renounces her love to save her beloved from the jaws of death.
She was entombed alive in a brick wall right in front of her lover's eyes.
Identify both the ‘X’ and ‘Y’.
10. VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL QUIZ
The love story of ‘X’ and ‘Y’ is about English royalty. ‘X’ mourned her husband's death for
40 years. ‘X’ was a lively, cheerful girl, fond of drawing and painting. She ascended the
throne of England in 1837 after the death of her uncle. While at first ‘Y’ was unpopular in
some circles because he was German, he came to be admired for his honesty, diligence and his
devotion to his family. The couple had nine children. She relied on his advice in matters of
state, especially in diplomacy. When ‘Y’ died in 1861, ‘X’ was devastated. She did not appear
in public for three years. Her extended seclusion generated considerable public criticism.
Several attempts were made on ‘X's life. However, under the influence of Prime Minister
Benjamin Disraeli, ‘X’ resumed public life, opening Parliament in 1866. But she never
stopped mourning her beloved, wearing black until her death in 1901. During ‘X’s reign, the
longest in his country’s history, became a world power on which "the sun never set."
Identify ‘X’ and ‘Y’.
