Train fares in the Valencia region of Spain are expected to increase by 16% over the next year. Fares rose 13% in both May and September last year and are now projected to rise another 3% based on the November retail price index of 2.9%. As a result, one-way fares between certain cities will rise, such as from €2.15 to €2.70 between Alicante and Elche. Frequent train travelers have expressed unhappiness with the increases, which exceed inflation, as costs of living are also rising while wages remain stagnant or have decreased.
1. Train fares in Valencia region are to increase by 16% in less than a year .The annual review is
due to be completed by the end of the month and this is what is expected to be announced .
There were rises in May and September last year which were 13% rises and once these prices
have been reviewed they are expected to go up by another 3%.
This 3% increase is based on the retail price index for November which stood at 2.9%.Once the
new prices come into effect then a journey , one way between Alicante and Elche will rise from
2.15 euros to 2.70 euros and a one way journey between Alicante and Orihuela will increase
from 3.70 to 4.20 euros .
Travelling from Alicante to Valencia will now cost 20 euros one way .Those who use the trains
regularly are far from happy and say that these increases are way above the rises in inflation
..The general cost of living has risen and wages have been reduced or frozen , so paying these
increases becomes more and more difficult .
One other blow to travellers is that the frequency of trains will also be changed in an effort to
save money .
