Vairagya refers to detachment from material things in the world. It involves giving up attachments to relationships, food, drink, power, and material desires to live freely without expectations. Practicing vairagya allows one to focus on more important things in life and gain knowledge by objectively observing the world while remaining uninvolved in what is happening around them. Vairagya consists of four stages that ultimately lead to complete detachment from the external world.
