The UX behind Web to Mobile
The Problem Space
The Australia based global workforce management solutions provider planned to develop a mobile application
for the existing web application. The existing workforce management solutions are being utilised across domains
be it aviation, security, transportation, health, child care, government, retail and hospitality. The client wanted PSI
to help them in migrating their web solutions to mobile platform.
The main objectives were to:
Understand end user’s goals in context of client’s business needs
Make the designs scalable & configurable for future needs
Three different web based applications to be merged and configured in a single mobile application, to
make it efficient and readily available
Gather an understanding of user expectations and opinions of the current web based system
Compatibility of solution across mobile platforms be it iOS or Android
Our Approach
Inquisitive approach adopted by the team to understand the end users’ perspective and business
aspects, by regularly raising queries to the client and conducting user interviews1
Our first priorities were to simplify customer journeys retaining the finer details, and balance
web and mobile platforms:
SRS (Software Requirement Specification) document was created which served as the detailed docu-
ment to understand the user requirements. The business needs were depicted in design using LO-FI
wireframes
2
Initiated with sketches to get best possible working idea of single mobile app3
The LO-FI Wireframes were designed to ensure the comprehensive user journey4
Frequent review of designs by the client5
Customer experience journey was mapped for uniformity across platforms6
The Challenge
The workforce management solution is being used by organisations wherein the employees and their supervisors
work in different shifts. They have to be informed about their rosters/schedules well in advance and log-in their
working hours. The users can manage their work shift time preferences, leaves and can swap their duties with
co-workers accordingly. Apart from managing the work schedules, the client also wanted to manage and prepare
their financials, collected from different data sources within the system.
The Design Process Adopted
Define the
problem
Improve the
design
Collect the
information
Collect feedback
on solution or
test model
Brainstorm and
analyze the ideas
Develop
solutions or build
a test model
Impact & Results
Start
The mobile device could track the employee movement and location using device’s Geo location and
helped automate the login system
The functionalities of three applications were combined in one mobile app
The complex user screens were split in mobile app while maintaining the workflow, for convenience
Users were able to visualize their rosters/schedules in efficient way
Supervisors were able to track and monitor their resources in a better way
Efficient design patterns were used to cater the scalability and future customization
