1) The document compares the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines to the long journey towards developing an effective malaria vaccine. 2) It took over 30 years of research to develop the first malaria vaccine, which was recommended by the WHO in 2021 for use in children in regions with moderate to high malaria transmission. 3) In contrast, several safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines were developed in under a year and have been administered to billions of people worldwide since late 2020.

- The paper on the left established that the use of ITNs had a marked benefit against childhood deaths but it only took WHO 26 years to recommend that ministries of health should consider providing bednets freely and the paper on the right helped to convince them.

Husband and wife team of Sahin and Tureci are both decsendants of Turkish immigrants to Germany. Sahin’s father worked as a gasbeiter in a Ford factory
