Utilitarian epistemology and the value of knowledgespetey
The document is a presentation on utilitarian epistemology given by Steve Petersen. It begins by motivating and elaborating on utilitarian epistemology, comparing it to deontic and virtue epistemology. It then applies utilitarian epistemology to topics like skepticism and justification. The presentation addresses how utilitarianism defines the value of knowledge and true belief, and discusses concepts like secure true belief, value under uncertainty, and epistemic responsibility. It concludes by summarizing the advantages of a utilitarian approach to epistemology.

Naturalism holds that science is the only route to knowledge. However, naturalism faces problems with demarcating science from non-science and is potentially self-undermining. These issues can be addressed by understanding science as inference to the best explanation, which aims to unify observations into the simplest theories. On this view, naturalism is a self-explanatory position that is scientifically justified by providing the best explanation of epistemology and philosophy.

What is knowledge 2016 revision virtue epistemologyJon Bradshaw
Reliabilism focuses on the reliability of belief-forming processes, while virtue epistemology focuses on the character traits of the knower. Virtue epistemology subsumes and addresses issues with foundationalism, coherentism, and reliabilism by defining knowledge as true belief arising from intellectual virtues like sound reasoning, perception, and memory. It explains why Gettier cases and unreliable beliefs are not knowledge. However, virtue epistemology is criticized for not precisely specifying how to justify beliefs and for potentially changing standards of knowledge over time and circumstances.
Epistemology is the study of knowledge, including what knowledge is, how it is acquired, and what can be known. There are various theories about the nature of knowledge and truth, and whether knowledge requires justified true belief. Skepticism questions whether justification and truth are possible to determine, and how we can know we understand the world correctly. Epistemology also considers the different types and sources of knowledge, such as a priori versus a posteriori knowledge.
This document discusses the nature of scientific thought and the stages of scientific thinking. It argues that scientific thought involves metaphorical constructions rather than real representations. It describes three stages of scientific thought: the concrete stage, the concrete-abstract stage, and the abstract stage. It also discusses the task of the philosophy of science as psychoanalyzing interests to understand how the mind moves from the real to the artificial and representation to abstraction. Lastly, it emphasizes that concepts in science are arrived at through research and understanding sources, and that the most authentic research challenges pre-existing concepts through methodological critique and understanding of sources.
Epistemology is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and scope of knowledge. There are two main types of epistemology: empiricism, which believes knowledge comes from experience and evidence, and rationalism, which believes knowledge comes from reason. Knowledge can be of objects, skills, or facts. It can be a priori, derived from reason alone, or a posteriori, derived from experience and reason combined. Propositional knowledge involves justified true belief, but some philosophers argue luck can still play a role in determining what constitutes knowledge. Theories of justification in epistemology include internalism, which sees justification as determined by internal mental states, and externalism, which allows external factors like perception. Structures of justification are
This document provides an overview of key concepts in epistemology and debates around skepticism. It discusses models of justification for knowledge, including foundationalism, coherence theory, and skepticism. It also examines the problem of skepticism, approaches to dealing with skepticism, and issues around warranted Christian belief and the existence of God.
Origins of knowldge 2016 revision 3. knowledge empiricismJon Bradshaw
The document discusses the arguments made by concept empiricists like Locke, Hume, and Berkeley against the idea of innate concepts or knowledge. These arguments claim that there are no innate concepts or knowledge, any concepts can be explained through experience, and innatism relies on questionable metaphysical assumptions. The document also reviews the differences between ideas/concepts, knowledge, a priori and a posteriori knowledge.
The document is a 1600 word Theory of Knowledge essay that evaluates the approach of skepticism in two areas of knowledge: visual arts and chemistry. It defines skepticism as questioning any knowledge claim by asking for clarity, consistency, and evidence. In visual arts, perception is subjective and open to multiple interpretations. In chemistry, inductive reasoning can seem logically valid but inconsistent with reality, as generalizations may omit uncertainties. Overall, ways of knowing like perception and logic provide satisfaction in interpretations, but cannot eliminate all unknowns to achieve absolute truth.
Epistemology and the problem of knowledgeNoel Jopson
The document discusses epistemology, the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature, scope, and validity of knowledge. It defines epistemology and examines what constitutes knowledge, including the traditional definition of knowledge as justified true belief. The document also explores the sources of knowledge according to rationalism and empiricism, and theories of truth such as the correspondence theory.
The document discusses the nature of sense perception and how the biological constitution of organisms influences what they can perceive. It questions whether sensations are private or can be communicated to others. It discusses how human perception through our senses has both benefits and limitations in acquiring knowledge. While senses provide access to information, they are also limited in what they can detect and perceptions can be influenced by beliefs.
This document provides an introduction to the author's paper on objectivity in science. It begins by outlining the debate around whether objectivity exists in science. The author then defines key terms like objectivity and science. The main body discusses the problem of underdetermination, which questions objectivity by showing that multiple hypotheses can be consistent with the evidence. The author argues this problem strikes a "death blow" to the idea of objective science. They intend to later argue that using perspectives and context, an intellectual consensus can be reached that approaches objectivity, though true objectivity cannot be achieved.
The document contains multiple responses from Mike Morrell on topics related to religion and spirituality, including pietism, miracles, atheism, and different perspectives on reality and metaphysics. Some key points made are that pietism results from an overemphasis on emotion and experience in religion, miracles should not be ruled out a priori, and that there are many competing hypotheses about ultimate realities but compassion is more important than clever metaphysical arguments.
This document discusses Foucault's theory of experience and how neuroscience relates to it. It summarizes that for Foucault, experience is an event that is dangerous, emotive, dynamic and unstable, with a history and context. Neuroscience experiments on free will and blindsight show that non-conscious perception and processing occurs, exceeding our conscious awareness. Foucault analyzed the concept of madness and how it is a socially produced deviant experience with porous boundaries, not a fixed mental illness. The document concludes by arguing we must challenge our experience through research to transform how we experience existence, rather than reduce experience or psychologize it.
This document discusses epistemology, which is the branch of philosophy concerned with the theory of knowledge. It addresses questions like what knowledge is, how it is acquired, and what can be known. The document outlines several key approaches in epistemology, such as rationalism which emphasizes the power of reason, and empiricism which prioritizes sense experience and evidence from the senses. It also summarizes perspectives from important epistemologists like Plato, Descartes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, and Kant regarding the nature and limits of knowledge.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Assessment and Planning in Educational technology.pptxKavitha Krishnan
In an education system, it is understood that assessment is only for the students, but on the other hand, the Assessment of teachers is also an important aspect of the education system that ensures teachers are providing high-quality instruction to students. The assessment process can be used to provide feedback and support for professional development, to inform decisions about teacher retention or promotion, or to evaluate teacher effectiveness for accountability purposes.

Introduction: epistemic value
Intuition: there is special epistemic value.
It should be consonant with one’s value theory.
Deontology can accommodate this (usually via internalism).
Virtue ethics can accommodate this (usually via externalism).
It seems utilitarianism cannot accommodate this.

An analogy
Money is not of intrinsic or final value.
Still, it’s worthy of study.
One can even speak loosely of “financial value”.
(Even when it’s of negative instrumental value.)
A utilitarian should hear “epistemic value” the same way.

The value of knowledge
Epistemic responsibility
Utilitarian value as expected utility
Anything with causal powers could lead to high or low utility.
To a utilitarian, any non-welfare “value” is via expected utility.
The charitable act has high expected utility relative to the
murderous one.
Utilitarian generalizations about value must be assigned under
uncertainty.

Reliabilism ≈ knowledge is true belief formed by a reliable

Knowledge and true belief differ only in extrinsic properties.
Reliabilism must say knowledge and mere true belief have the

Plato’s answer was in this spirit: “by its binding ties.”
Williamson: but “mere true beliefs can be held with dogmatic
confidence, and knowledge lost through forgetting.”

Williamson’s answer
Williamson:
Knowledge is of more instrumental value because it’s harder to
shake.
For example: mere true beliefs based on false premises are
vulnerable.
Kvanvig:
Knowledge is in many ways more fragile.
It is at most a contingent matter about local causal tendencies
and psychological facts.
(This point seems to generalize to any account of knowledge’s
instrumental value.)

The financial analogy again
To see the uniquely utilitarian view, let’s develop that
financial analogy.
Intuition: luck makes the difference between knowledge and
mere true belief.

true belief profit
knowledge earnings
mere true belief windfall

A revisionist defense
“Why is knowledge of more expected utility than mere true
belief?” ≈
“Why are earnings of more expected utility than windfalls?”
Answer: they’re not!
“Why is a charitable act more valuable than a murder that
results in the same amount of utility?”
To assume there is an answer begs the question against the
utilitarian.
Similarly (one step removed) for our cases at hand.

The moral
Remember: the utilitarian assigns non-welfare states value by
expected utility,
and expected utility calculations only make sense under
uncertainty.
The value problem stipulates that both result in the same
instrumental value,
just like one can stipulate that some murder leads to high
utility.
The situation is like Zagzebski’s coffee!

Explaining away intuitions
Of course this answer scorns our intuitions.
This is familiar ground for a utilitarian, and they have a
familiar answer:
rules of thumb are often mistaken for just-plain, categorical
rules.
Compare: which is more preferable,
1 the average life?
2 a life with the same total welfare, but you’re stinking rich?
Our intuitions may incline us to the rich life, though on
reflection they shouldn’t.

More explaining away
There’s another strategy for explaining away intuitions,
particular to this case:
knowledge may seem more valuable because it makes sense to
seek it.
Seeking mere true belief, on the other hand, is at best unwise,
and at worst incoherent.
(Just like seeking a financial windfall.)

Goldman’s answer
Goldman’s recent “value autonomization” response:
a psychological story like mine about value attribution,
plus a claim that such intuitions track what’s actually
valuable.
But:
We don’t think similar arguments apply to money.
Intuitions carry no evidential weight when undermined.

Justification as epistemic responsibility
A common intuition is that epistemic justification is epistemic
responsibility.
Justified beliefs are “blameless” or “praiseworthy”.
This accounts for two major desiderata of epistemic
justification:
justification is a positive evaluation
false beliefs can have it

Problems with epistemic responsibility
But:
1 Epistemic responsibility does not seem necessary for
justification.
Beliefs not under our control often look justified, blameless,
and even praiseworthy.
Example: perception
In effect, this picture seems to beg the question against the
externalist.
2 Epistemic responsibility seems to require doxastic voluntarism.
This is more problematic than “regular” free will.
The libertarian about belief formation seems to foreclose on
cognitive science.
Typical compatibilist strategies won’t work at the low cognitive
level.

Utilitarian responsibility generally
The problems should sound familiar from normative debates
on action theory.
The utilitarian line:
Value does not require free will
There is no “true” moral responsibility (retribution is unjust;
there is no desert)
“x is responsible for y ” ≈ “x is the most relevant locus to
apply change with respect to outcomes like y .”

Responsible people
Normally, people are responsible in this sense,
because people are the best place to apply such change.
This is because:
The causes further behind them are typically opaque
(Contrast the hypnotized murderer)
People are more response-able

Utilitarian epistemic responsibility
Epistemic responsibility is the same.
Risk in belief-formation is ubiquitous,
but people are usually the best level at which to control for
such risk.
A person is epistemically responsible, to the utilitarian, if and
only if no effort to change the thinker for better (future)
epistemic results is appropriate.
This accounts for internalist intuitions.

Utilitarian justification and externalism
Moral responsibility revolution: maybe factors outside the
person are morally responsible!
Epistemological revolution: maybe factors outside the person
are epistemically responsible!
Justification as utilitarian responsibility thus allows for
justification externalism.

Conclusion
A utilitarian epistemologist:
can account for epistemic value as a financier accounts for
financial value
has a good story for why the value of knowledge problem is
such a challenge
can capture the good parts of epistemic justification as
responsibility without the problematic assumptions
Other possible implications of utilitarian epistemology:
an answer to Pritchard’s puzzle about luck and knowledge
an insouciance about skepticism (“all profits are windfalls”)
Of course, all this is a sketch, so far . . .
