Singing songs and reciting chants and rhymes provides a great foundation for
literacy development...we need to purposefully use them as learning opportunities.

Attendees will:
Learn how musical stimuli motivates speech and supports non-verbal communication.
Discuss how music supports the emotions and self expression.
Use different strategies to improve listening skills.
Explore use of symbols, signing communication aids and sensory resources.
Gain a basic understanding of key musical elements (e.g. pulse, pitch, tempo) and their
impact on communication.
Understand the effects of physical/vocal warm ups, singing games and music activities.
Be provided with new repertoire (Lead music sheets and a CD).
Course Leader: Yvonne White BEd (Hons) Music, LTCL
Yvonne is a music teacher with 20 years experience, an Advisory Music
Teacher for The Voices Foundation, a workshop trainer and song writer.
She was the music specialist at Victoria Special School in Birmingham for
seven years teaching pupils who had moderate to complex needs. She was
also part of the Sing Up Accessible Learning Autism Network.
