User Groups: The Gateway to Apache

When we think of user groups most of us think of code, conversations, and cold beverages. However, they can be so much more. User groups can be a powerful tool to help promote open source ecosystems like the ASF. Bob brings several years of experience serving in many roles within the Chicago Java User Group, one of the largest Java user groups in the world. During his tenure, Bob has promoted open source through activities, topic selection, and community development. Bob will discuss ways to engage communities within the ASF to get speakers, set up activities to promote open source, match sponsors to help fund these activities, and grow members to be more active in software communities. Come discuss things that work, things that don't, and bring some great ideas home to make your local software community one people won't want to leave.

Too often though, on- and offline are treated as separate worlds, with little effort made to bridge the gap. Communities thrive when there is varied and ongoing interaction. Merging physical and non-physical conversations, events, and activities is one of the strongest tactics for building community in the real world.

The ASF runs on more than just code donations. To operate the way it does today requires significant amounts of cash and services donated by our generous sponsors and individual supporters. In this session, we'll examine the different sponsorship programs available at the ASF and how they work, including options that target specific projects. We'll discuss how the ASF operates compared to similar foundations like Eclipse Foundation or the Linux Foundation and some of the advantages and limitations we have based on our 501c(3) Not-for-profit structure. Finally, we'll have a discussion on the future of open source fundraising. Bring your thoughts and ideas.

The Apache Software Foundation has a 20 year history of building resilient and sustainable communities of software developers through the Apache Way. While some companies are adopting Inner sourcing, other companies still have a taboo surrounding open source culture. Many of us work at these open source agnostic companies and don’t have manager in our title. Are those of us in those companies doomed to a life of Dilbert? You don’t have to be! This talk is all about how to bring a little Apache culture to your Apache oblivious team. This talk will cover how a little Apache Way goes a long way solving common team problems with knowledge sharing, technical/personal disputes, mentorship, and shipping software. So even though you’re the only one on your team that “gets” Apache, everyone can share in the rewards of being a part of an effective team.

Modular Open Source in Java for Now and Later
The Apache community creates the building blocks of software companies world wide. Developers designing those building blocks require a different mindset than developers focused on building applications. Good building blocks can be repurposed, reused, and recomposed. Good building blocks are modular. This talk focus on building good blocks in Java using current language features, frameworks (Apache Felix), and prepare for new modularity features available in Java 9. This talk will cover when it makes sense to break a project down further as well as some of the strategies and tools involved in doing so. We'll cover lessons learned I've learned doing this for clients as well as within the ASF with Apache Tika.

What's My Modularity
Since the inception of the JAR modularity has been a big reason why developers have chosen Java as a development platform. Continuous delivery with Gradle
This document discusses using Gradle, Artifactory, and Git to enable continuous delivery of software. zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

The expansion of AI services necessitates enhanced computational capabilities on edge devices. Temporal Event Neural Networks (TENNs), developed by BrainChip, represent a novel and highly efficient state-space network. TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
Integration with BrainChip’s Akida neuromorphic hardware IP further enhances TENNs’ capabilities, enabling the realization of highly capable, portable and passively cooled edge devices. Spark is the widely used ETL tool for processing, indexing and ingesting data to serving stack for search. Milvus is the production-ready open-source vector database. In this talk we will show how to use Spark to process unstructured data to extract vector representations, and push the vectors to Milvus vector database for search serving.
