Breaking Down "A Win-Win Solution: The Empirical Evidence on School Choice"EdChoice
Proponents of private school choice make a wide array of claims about its benefits. They claim competition will spur public school improvement; vouchers will reduce the cost of education; students who get vouchers will show achievement gains; school choice will improve integration in schools and more. A vast body of research on whether school choice programs work now exists.
The fourth edition of A Win-Win Solution: The Empirical Evidence on School Choice examines 100 empirical studies of school choice programs in one convenient report.
Has school choice had the effect predicted by some economists, education experts, and millions of parents? Do the results argue for wider experiments or the adoption of broad-based vouchers or education savings accounts? This Slideshare features the definitive research.

CIO Business Innovation Series. Paul DiModica, author of the book “Sell Technology: Technology Sales Is a Premeditated Sport”, talks about technology salesmen:
Q: What are the top mistakes people make when selling technology? Well, first of all, most of them come to sell instead of listen. They're not prepared, and they tend to shoot from the hip. Secondly, they don't know what they're selling.
Q: They don't understand their product? No, it's deeper than that. They don't understand the value of what they're selling and, consequently, can't explain its value. And thirdly, they sell technology instead of a solution.

The topic of structured data has a rapidly growing audience looking into options beyond “rich snippets”. But some webmasters, if not most, are not sure what to do next. Many have questions like “What are the benefits of publishing structured data?”, “Does it influence rankings?”, and “can its impact be measured?”.
The case study presented in this slide deck will answer these types of questions by telling the success story of a website that was semantically optimized by using schema.org and other protocols.
Details are provided on what was optimized, data showing semantically-enriched webpages generated substantially more search engine-referred traffic than non- or less-enriched control groups did, and insights gained by re-using structured data to measure its impact on search.

This infographic ranks the Top 10 Solar States based on solar capacity installed in 2013. It also includes the number of megawatts installed per state, number of houses powered per megawatt of solar added, and fun factoids for each state. We also show the rankings "remixed" based on number of solar jobs added in 2013, cumulative solar capacity, price decline, and percentage of new electricity generation from solar.
Today, from security and battlefield readiness to cost savings and efficiency, America’s military is making an unprecedented commitment to renewable energy sources, and solar is “walking point” on many of these new, innovative efforts.
2012 was a historic and busy year for the U.S. solar energy industry. Photovoltaic (PV) installations grew 76% over 2011, to total 3,313 megawatts (MW) in 2012, with an estimated market value of $11.5 billion. Each market segment (residential, non-residential, and utility) showed growth over 2011, while the overall markets in most states expanded as well. Installed prices for PV systems fell 27% during 2012 and at least 13% in each market segment. Nearly 83,000 homes installed solar PV, and cumulative PV installations in the U.S. surpassed 300,000. Solar energy is being deployed on a massive scale by the most iconic brands and best-managed companies in the U.S. in order to help lower operating costs and increase profits. The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and the Vote Solar Initiative (Vote Solar) have unveiled a report naming the companies using solar on their facilities in the U.S., ranked by cumulative solar energy capacity. Learn more: www.seia.org/top20Solar
New initiatives undertaken in 2009 led to the first-ever permits for utility-scale solar projects on public lands in 2010. Today, BLM has permitted 16 projects, which will provide nearly 6,058 megawatts of generating capacity, enough to power approximately 1.2 million homes.
This fact sheet highlights some statistics from a report by the University of Tennessee Howard H. Baker Center for Public Policy on federal energy incentives. The report shows that federal support for solar energy is consistent with support for traditional energy sources.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
