The US FDA has approved the first implantable device to treat obesity by electrically stimulating the vagus nerve in the stomach to curb appetite. The Maestro Rechargeable System is approved for obese adults aged 18+ who have a BMI between 35-45 and obesity-related conditions. It works by sending electrical pulses to the vagus nerve to regulate feelings of hunger and fullness. Clinical trials found patients who received the active device lost on average 8.5% more excess weight than the control group after 12 months.
