Tensions between North and South Korea could escalate globally and North Korea's nuclear program risks setting back globalization or starting another world war.

Korea had been ruled by Japan until 1945 when it was divided along the 38th parallel after Japan's surrender, with the Soviet Union occupying the north and the US occupying the south. This division led to the establishment of authoritarian regimes in both North and South Korea, led by Kim Il-sung and Syngman Rhee respectively, which sought to reunify Korea under their ideology. Border skirmishes increased and nearly 10,000 troops were killed before the 1950 outbreak of the Korean War, when North Korea launched a surprise attack on the South. The UN authorized a force led by the US to defend South Korea.

The American Civil War began in 1861 following Abraham Lincoln's election as President. Key issues included states' rights versus federal authority and the expansion of slavery. After 11 southern states seceded to form the Confederacy, the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. While the Union fought to preserve the nation, the Confederacy fought for states' rights. A major turning point was the three-day Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, where the Union repelled a Confederate invasion of Pennsylvania and inflicted heavy losses. Continued depleted resources and manpower led to Confederate defeat and Lee's surrender in April 1865, effectively ending the war.

The Korean War began in 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea, capturing Seoul and much of the South quickly. UN forces led by the US intervened and pushed the North Koreans back to the Pusan Perimeter. General MacArthur then launched an amphibious invasion at Inchon, cutting North Korean supply lines and allowing UN forces to drive north. When China entered the war in late 1950, UN forces were pushed back south. Fighting eventually stabilized along the original border, leading to an armistice in 1953 that divided Korea along the 38th parallel. The war resulted in over 1 million casualties between all sides.

The study found people who eat fast food are 51% more likely to develop depression, and the more fast food consumed the greater the likelihood of depression. A junk food diet can also affect brain synapses and molecules related to memory and learning. Animal tests showed rats fed a high-fat diet similar to junk food had trouble navigating a maze they previously mastered. Fast foods are high in carbs and calories which can cause blood sugar spikes altering the normal insulin response. Its people are starving and risk death to flee their tragic land. The country is virtually friendless and suffers under a bizarre system of monarchical communism. Pyongyang’s armed forces are dwarfed by those of the U.S., the globe’s premier military power.
