In 1957, Charles Hard Townes and Arthur Leonard Schawlow began studying the infrared laser while at Bell Labs, shifting their focus to visible light. They published their theoretical calculations in Physical Review that year, coining the term "optical maser." Lasers have since been developed using chemical reactions, excimer gases, solid materials, fiber optics, dyes, free electrons, nuclear reactions, and photonic crystals, with predictions they could become both powerful weapons or useful tools.
