A urinary tract infection is a very
common type of infection in your
urinary system. It can involve any part
of your urinary system. Bacteria —
especially E. coli — are the most
common cause of UTIs.

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an
infection in any part of the urinary system.
The urinary system includes the kidneys,
ureters, bladder and urethra. Most
infections involve the lower urinary tract —
the bladder and the urethra.

5. CLASSIFICATION
There are two types of urinary trackt infection
depending on which part of the urinary tract is infected.
1. Lower urinary tract infection
• Cystitis
• Urethritis
2. Upper Urinary tract infection
• Pyelonephriti

(A) Urethritis: An infection of the urethra, the hollow tube
that drains urine from the bladder to the outside of the body.
(B)Cystitis: A bacterial infection in the bladder that often has
moved up from the urethra.
2.Upper UTI
(A) Pyelonephritis: An infection of the kidneys that
is usually a result of an infection that has spread up
the tract
7. CAUSES
• Infection in the baldder due to bacteria
• E. coli 80% of UTI
• 20% of UTI caused by gram negative
bacteria
• Sexually active womens
• Kidney stones
• Urinary catheters
• Not keeping the genital area clean and dry
• Weakened immune system
• Using public toilets
8. Risk factor of UTI
• Female gender
• Diabetes
• Pregnancy
• Gout
• Incomplete emptying of the bladder
and urinary stasis
• Calculi (stone) in the uterus or kidney
• Instrumentation of the urinary tract
(e.g., catheterization, cystoscopic
procedure)

MANIFESTATIONS
• Pain or burning sensation during urination
• Nocturia
• Incontinence
• Hematuria
• Back pain mat also present
• Abdominal pain
• Pelvic discomfort
• Fatigue
11. MANAGEMENT
Management of UTIs typically involves
pharmacologic therapy of patient education.
- Antibiotic therapy
Ciprofloxacine
Levofloxacine
Amoxicillin
- Antimicrobial agents
- Analgesic
12. PREVENTION
• Maintain good hygiene
• Drink more water
• Taking probiotics and cranberry
supplements
• Emptying bladder often
• Avoid Holding urine
• Wearing breathable cotton cloths and pants
• Avoid excessive consumption of caffeine
and alcohol
