This document describes a product design project for AUT University that explores urban self-reliance and disaster relief in the context of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. The project began by developing an off-grid emergency communication device to help stranded individuals and communities in the aftermath of the quake when basic services failed. Design research within the context of the earthquake provided insights into domestic difficulties during the disaster and formed a design brief for a practical product to promote urban self-reliance.
