Learning how to do information architecture holistically is damn hard, and standard IA conferences and books often don’t deliver so much as they repeat the same tired old saws. How’s a sophomore IA to learn and improve their practice in this echo chamber? By challenging ourselves to explore disciplines outside of IA.
We’ll talk about just a few of the disciplines we can draw insight and wisdom from. We’ll learn why it’s important to make sure our findings are statistically valid, how a passion for literature translates into better communication skills, and why we should take psychology, business and relationships as seriously as we take IA. Finally, we’ll examine real-life examples of how going outside of our comfort zone can help us produce our strongest, most innovative, and best work.
That's the slides I used to present the idea of small gamification and show how to design it with the GAMIFICATION+ framework during the Athens Gamification Meetup
Social media and social networks have become vital sources for prospecting, lead generation, client engagement and service support. In fact, a recent study of over 500 B2B professionals found that 72.6% of sales professionals that use social media outperformed their peers that don’t.
In addition to social media literacy and insights, today’s sales organizations need a bullet-proof sales process and strategy as well. The line between sales and marketing as well as customer and vendor has become blurred. Today’s sales and marketing process is collaborative and customer centric.
At this lunch and learn, guest speaker Shane Gibson, Sales Trainer for Build Direct will share:
The Rules of Engagement in social media for sales professionals
How your social graph impacts your ability to close deals and generate leads.
How to maximize your social media profiles so they attract clients.
How becoming an expert content curator can build credibility and influence.
How to use tools like Hootsuite and Nimble social CRM to pull all of your social networking together and make it easy and profitable to manage.
Peter Stidwill - Playful Learning: How to Grow Your Game-Based KnowledgeSeriousGamesAssoc
What successes and failures have teachers found in the classroom when using games? What are the biggest barriers they face? How are they using games? And what do they want to see more of? In this session, we’ll explore what we’ve learnt from a network of over 1,500 educators and highlight the elements of successful partnerships with developers, researchers and designers.
Playful Learning, powered by the Learning Games Network, is a nationwide initiative that invites us, together, to innovate through the use of games in education. We’ll talk about how you can tap into this growing resource.

The Reluctant Design Strategist: The Story of a UX Team of 1.5 Failing ForwardMegan Ellinger
In a nonprofit organization like mine, resources are often sparse. My team is one and half people strong. We do more with less every day. And despite our best efforts, sometimes we fail.
While reflecting on our successes and failures a theme has emerged: our successes occurred when we spent time developing a clear strategy with our clients. And if we couldn’t work with them directly, we made one up.
A Practical Guide to Measuring User ExperienceRichard Dalton
Measuring the success (or failure) of an experience can be a daunting and confusing endeavor. In this presentation Richard shares 11 guidelines to help you quantitatively measure your user experience.
Richard provides techniques and tips for each phase and illustrates their use with real examples from his team’s work at Vanguard. To conclude, he describes some of the cultural and change management challenges involved when an organization uses data to inform design decisions.
Effect Mapping: A Better Way to Get Really Usable Results Out of IT ProjectsJonas Söderström

How are stories constructed? // The things we buy, the decisions we make, how we spend our time— stories govern all these actions. But how are these stories constructed? Specifically, what have we learned about how our brains make sense of and integrate new information?
Critique is a vital skill for any good designer. Here we talk about it's application in everyday life as well as the formal work we do with clients as UX Designers.
This talk has been given at a number of conferences by myself and the amazing Aaron Irizaryy (http://www.thisisaaronslife.com/)
We'll be keeping the most up-to-date version of the slides uploaded here. If you'd like a copy from a previous iteration, please get in touch with either Aaron or myself, and we'll happily get one to you.

Five Things IAs Need To Talk About More

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion,
butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance
accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give
orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem,
pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently,
and die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." - Robert Heinlein
