Fossil fuels and minerals form from ancient biological materials over millions of years. Coal forms from decaying plant matter that is buried and subjected to heat and pressure deep underground over long periods of time. This transforms the biological material into coal. Oil and natural gas form in a similar manner from the remains of tiny marine organisms. Minerals form when elements and compounds crystallize from molten rock or are deposited by water. For example, iron ore forms as iron-bearing minerals crystallize from lava or are deposited by groundwater.
Understanding Economic Systems: Types of Economic SystemsCasey Robertson
The document discusses different types of economic systems that nations use to answer three main economic questions: what to produce, how to produce it, and for whom to produce. It describes traditional, command, market, and mixed economies. Traditional economies are centered around family and customs. Command economies have government control production and resources. Market economies use supply and demand to determine production. Mixed economies combine elements of command and market systems.
Understanding Economic Systems - United States' EconomicsCasey Robertson
The document discusses the key principles of the United States economic system of capitalism. It identifies four main principles: private property, freedom of choice, profit, and competition. It also outlines the roles of consumers and producers in a market economy, with consumers deciding what to buy and producers determining what products and services to offer.
Tyler Kenneth Carlile has been named to the quarterly Dean's List for Autumn Quarter 2014 at the University of Washington Bothell for achieving a high grade point average that places him among the top undergraduates. A notation of this honor will be placed on his transcript and the university will notify his hometown newspaper. The chancellor congratulated Tyler on his academic success and wished him continued success.
Understanding Economic Systems - Supply and DemandCasey Robertson
The document discusses the principles of supply and demand that form the basis of market economies. It defines demand as the quantity of goods or services that consumers are willing and able to buy, and defines supply as the quantity of goods or services that businesses are willing and able to provide. The supply and demand curves graph the relationship between price and quantity, with the supply curve sloping up and the demand curve sloping down. The equilibrium point is where the two curves intersect and price and quantity are in balance.
Understanding Economic Systems: 6 Steps of Economic Decision MakingCasey Robertson
The document outlines a six-step process for making economic decisions: 1) define the problem, 2) identify choices, 3) evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each choice, 4) choose one option, 5) act on that choice, and 6) review the decision.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
