The talk discusses the history of Vyatta, an open source networking company founded in 2005. It aimed to be the RedHat of networking using a free software model. However, Vyatta struggled with issues like lack of infrastructure support, scaling challenges, dependence on outdated routing protocols, cost of support, and competition. While the free software model provided benefits like free developers and publicity, Vyatta failed to gain significant market share. The talk suggests free software platforms take time to mature and that new opportunities may arise from technologies like DPDK, Yang models, Openstack and OpenDaylight.
Secret of Intel Management Engine by Igor SkochinskyCODE BLUE
Intel Management Engine ("ME") is a dedicated microcontroller embedded in all recent Intel motherboard chipsets. It works independently from the main CPU, can be active even when the rest of the system is powered off, and has a dedicated connection to the network interface for out-of-band networking which bypasses the main CPU and the installed OS. It not only performs the management tasks for which it was originally designed, but also implements features such as Intel Identity Protection Technology (IPT), Protected Audio-Video Path, Intel Anti-Theft, Intel TPM, NFC communication and more. There is not much info available about how exactly it works, and this talk aims to fill the gap and describe the low-level details.

Igor Skochinsky is currently one of the main developers of the world-famous Interactive Disassembler and Hex-Rays Decompiler. Even before joining Hex-Rays in 2008 he had been interested in reverse engineering for a long time and had brief periods of Internet fame after releasing a dumper for DRM-ed iTunes files (QTFairUse6) and hacking the original Amazon Kindle. He spoke previously at Recon, Breakpoint and Hack.LU.

How to Avoid Kubernetes Multi-tenancy CatastrophesWeaveworks
Picture this… It’s the middle of the night on a Saturday, and the sound of slack messages rolling in rouses you from slumber. Then two text messages chime in quick succession. As you grab your phone and pry open an eye to figure out WTF, the phone rings - and it’s your boss!? You stammer out a “Hello?”
She sounds alarmed. “Wake up, we have a big problem”
“It’s two-in-the-morning, what problem?” you croak back.
“I guess you missed the alerts while you were sleeping…API endpoints in prod are getting knocked over, and the tokens responsible are yours.”
“They’re what? How?”
“Get to your machine and jump on the meeting link I just sent - everybody’s waiting”
Yikes. Join Weaveworks for some real-world tales from the trenches, and learn about the 5 simple things you can do to prevent making a royal mess of Tenancy in Kubernetes. Hear from developers that got that late night call because of a bone-headed accident, and teams affected by gob-smacking access and permissions foul-ups. Luckily for us, they were happy to tell us the tales so we can learn from their pain.
Weave GitOps Workspaces is a new feature that enables multi-tenancy so platform engineers can scale their GitOps workflows across numerous development teams. Oh yeah, it also wards -off wake-up calls in the middle of the night, which is nice.

SFO15-210: Kernel Mainline Status of Mobile Chipsets
Speaker: Tim Bird
Date: September 22, 2015
★ Session Description ★
In this session, Tim Bird will discuss the mainline status of several ARM SoCs used in mobile products. The average phone uses kernel software that is 3 years old, 20 versions behind mainline, and has 1 to 3 million lines of code out-of-tree. Tim will describe the “Device Mainlining” project of the Linux foundation CE Workgroup, which seeks to address this problem. Some of the activities of this project are:
* publishing tools for mainline analysis
* finding big areas where multiple vendors have code out of tree
* identifying institutional barriers to corporate developer mainlining, and addressing them through education, training, and collaboration
* working with upstream to address deficient sub-systems or needed maintainer assistance
It is hoped that discussion will ensue about ways to continue enhancing this work, to get more SoC code mainlined.

Why is Open Source so Good: Thirty Years of Lessons LearnedMark Atwood
One would think that traditional corporate software development, where developers are closely supervised, and directed by plans and schedules, would result in the creation of more consistent and higher quality software than open source development, where developers have significant freedom to choose the goals and pace of projects they choose to work on. And yet, open source software is often of excellent quality, and can transform existing industries and business models.
When does the open source "magic" happen, and when does it now? We can learn some lessons from looking back over several open source projects and communities, and see how those lessons have been applied to the current OpenStack project and community.

QCon SF 2017 - Microservices: Service-Oriented DevelopmentAmbassador Labs
Conventional wisdom is that microservices is an architecture that is the spiritual successor to service-oriented architecture. While true, this myopic view of microservices ignores some of the profound workflow shifts in today’s microservices organizations.
The reality is that microservices is an architecture _and_ workflow. In this talk, we’ll introduce the workflow of service-oriented development. Rafael will talk about how the real goal of microservices is to break up a monolithic development workflow. We’ll show you how, by breaking up your workflow, you can build software that lets you move fast and make things.

DPDK performance
How to not just do a demo with DPDK
The Intel DPDK provides a platform for building high performance Network Function Virtualization applications. But it is hard to get high performance unless certain design tradeoffs are made. This talk focuses on the lessons learned in creating the Brocade vRouter using DPDK. It covers some of the architecture, locking and low level issues that all have to be dealt with to achieve 80 Million packets per second forwarding.
Seven years ago at LCA, Van Jacobsen introduced the concept of net channels but since then the concept of user mode networking has not hit the mainstream. There are several different user mode networking environments: Intel DPDK, BSD netmap, and Solarflare OpenOnload. Each of these provides higher performance than standard Linux kernel networking; but also creates new problems. This talk will explore the issues created by user space networking including performance, internal architecture, security and licensing.
Open source software depends on collaborative effort but many contributions are lost because of the often adversarial process. How can reviewers be turned into mentors?
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.
