Finding the difference of
terrain from major WW1
battles
Directions
In this exercise you will be taken to the sites of 5 major battles of World War One.
After arriving at each site and given a brief explanation of what happened you will
explain the differences in what the area looks like now vs what it might have
looked like during the war. Whether it is the absence of buildings or the way the
land may have been utilized for soldiers at the time.
Battle of Mons (August 23rd, 1914)
Battle of mons was the first battle of World War One where British forces met the
advancing German 1st army. The battle would be won by the German mainly due
to the advantage of sheer troop numbers. How might have this town looked during
WW1?
First battle of Ypres (October 19th- November 22nd, 1914)
The battle of Ypres took place over the course of two months and saw some of the
first major casualties of the war with both sides losing more than 50,000 soldiers
and would be a glimpse on how much bloodshed would happen in WW1. What
would this street look like during the battle of Ypres?
Battle of Verdun (February 21st-December 18th, 1916)
The Battle of Verdun would be the longest battle engagements during WW1and
become one of the most costly battles in human history. Lasting almost the whole
year of 1916 there were over one million casualties and both sides. This battle
would be one of the biggest pushes for Germany on the Western front. How might
this street look different if it was 1916?
Battle of the Somme (July 1st-November 18th, 1916)
The Battle of the Somme would give us a first look at how WW1 would become
based around trench warfare. This battle would be the greatest battle in terms of
numbers on the western front. How might the fields around the area look if it was
1916?
Battle of Cambrai (November 20th- December 7th, 1917)
The Battle of Cambrai would see some of the first major uses of tanks in WW1 by
the British. Towards the end of the war many new weapons would be introduced
on the battlefield. Besides tanks there would be the addition of machine guns and
airplane combat. How might these buildings look if it was 1917?
