The document discusses the challenges faced by several Prime Ministers of Pakistan in its early history. It mentions issues like the refugee problem, financial difficulties, disputes with India over boundaries and assets. It then outlines the achievements of Liaquat Ali Khan as Pakistan's first PM in tackling riots and establishing administrative systems, and his assassination in 1951. Several other PMs faced problems with movements in Punjab, food shortages, and imposed martial law. Political instability and disputes over electoral systems led to frequent dismissals of Prime Ministers in the 1950s.
1. The document discusses political development theory including Parson's "pattern variables" and elements of democratization like the rule of law, civil society, and protection of minority rights.
2. It also discusses factors that enable or hinder democracy, such as per capita income, experience with pluralism, and commitment to reform. Freedom House surveys measure political rights and civil liberties.
3. Problems that can hinder development are discussed, as well as alternative approaches like viewing it as an interactive process between government and civil society focused on power dispersion and responsiveness.
This document discusses modernization theory, which posits that societies progress through stages from "traditional" to "modern". It is criticized for privileging markers like urbanization, literacy, and industrialization to define modernity. Key questions are raised around who defines modernity and whether all societies truly progress in the same linear way. The theory is also examined in the context of its origins in post-World War 2 United States as a way to promote capitalism over communism and analyze newly decolonized nations. Functionalism, which views society as analogous to a biological organism, is discussed as an influence on modernization theory.
This document provides an overview of key concepts in political science and governance, including:
1) It defines political science as the systematic study of the state and government, and outlines its main areas of focus.
2) It discusses essential elements of the state like the people, territory, government, and sovereignty, explaining their meanings under the Philippine constitution.
3) It covers theories of state origins and the development of political science as an academic discipline, citing thinkers like Aristotle, Machiavelli, and Lieber.

Political Development of the Philippine GovernmentJheng Reyes
Prior to Spanish colonization, the Philippines was composed of independent barangays ruled by datus. Each barangay had its own laws and social hierarchy, and sometimes barangays joined together in confederations. Under Spanish rule, the barangays were consolidated into centralized provinces under the authority of a governor-general in Manila, who had executive, legislative, and judicial powers over the entire country. After the Philippine Revolution, several revolutionary governments were established, including the Katipunan, Biak-na-Bato Republic, and Revolutionary Government, before the Philippines came under U.S. control and a series of colonial governments. During Japanese occupation, the Japanese military administered the country before establishing a puppet republic.

The Cuban Revolution overthrew the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1959, led by Fidel Castro. Castro established a communist government in Cuba and seized property owned by Americans and Cubans. This strained relations with the United States, who did not approve of a communist country so close. The failed Bay of Pigs invasion and Cuban Missile Crisis further deteriorated relations between the two countries. Due to the US embargo and Cuba's communist policies, Cuba's economy declined significantly. Relations between Cuba and the US remain tense to this day.
The document discusses the Columbian Exchange between Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas following Christopher Columbus' voyage in 1492. Key aspects of the exchange included animals, plants, and diseases. Europeans brought livestock, crops, and diseases that devastated the Native American population. Crops from the Americas like potatoes and maize became widely grown in Europe and other parts of the world. The exchange dramatically impacted global populations, economies, and cuisines.

How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?

The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction.
