Humans of The War is a nonprofit that provides temporary and permanent housing to homeless veterans and their families through shelters and a foster family program. Its mission is to help veterans obtain stable housing so they can focus on adapting to civilian life without stress over basic needs. The organization evaluates veterans to determine the best housing placement, such as with a foster family or local shelter. It is run by a small team dedicated to finding military heroes in need the best living situations.

2. Our Mission
“Positivity, Placement, and Protection.”
As of right now, there are currently 40,000 homeless
Veterans. 13,000 Veterans are experiencing unsheltered
homelessness.
Humans of The War provides temporary and permanent
housing to homeless Veterans and their families through
the use of shelters and a foster family program.
Our goal is to help provide Vets with a stable living
environment with the hopes of ending Veteran
homelessness. By creating a livable environment, they
can focus on adapting to civilian life without the stress
of missing basic needs.

gaining their support.
2. We understand that the economy is affecting everyone, but there are so many other ways
to give back! Consider becoming a foster family and allowing a Veteran to stay with you.

for their situation.

Estimated cost for one year: $410,400
Donors and investors also provide access to fundraising
support such as venues and non-monetary donations.
Fundraising costs vary year to year due to this.

6. Information System
We run extensive checks on our Veterans in order to place them appropriately. Families who are willing
to foster a Veteran and their family have extensive background checks, visitations prior, and a lengthy
application process.
Veteran files include: Name, date of birth, their time spent in the military and discharge date, mental
health evaluation, single/marital status and children if applicable.
Weekly check-ins with both foster family and Veteran are taken place with our team and recorded in the
file.
Our website features a Veteran Spotlight for future foster families, donors, or the general public to view
our success stories.
A Veteran suffering from PTSD who was
placed in a loving home with her service
animal. She has since gotten employment
at a local VA center and is receiving
treatment for PTSD.
Navy Veteran who was on the streets while
waiting for housing voucher. After learning of
HoTW, he stayed at a local shelter and was off
the streets until his permanent housing was
resolved.
Army Veteran living with a foster family who has
returned to college and earning a degree. With
stability comes great achievements!

7. Program Evaluation
Humans of The War is committed to finding
safe and adequate housing for Veterans after
discharge from the military.
• With extensive surveys our clients complete, we
will measure the success of our program based
on Veteran responses.
• We use a numerical score in order to see where
our program needs improvement and where it
excels.
• Clients also submit in-depth reviews of the
services provided and have an opportunity to
share what they feel needs work.

Veterans will submit their SF 180 form, which shows their
discharge records and military records.
• What branch of service did you join?
• Have you been diagnosed with any physical or mental
disabilities?
• If you were dishonorably discharged, please take this time
to explain why. (We accept all discharge types on a case-by-
case basis)
• Are you in need of immediate temporary housing or
permanent housing?
• Are you currently employed or in need of employment?
• What does a day in your life look like?
• Did you have any combat tours?
• Do you feel prepared for civilian life? Why or why not?
• Our military personnel will ask the in-depth
questions regarding time on deployment and
mental health assessment.

and secure housing opportunities after deployment.
• Mental health concerns in Veterans is at an all-time high
due to the lack of normalcy they face when returning home.
• Since 2010, Veteran homelessness has declined 55%. With
the help of Humans of The War, we hope to get this number
down even more!
• Veterans can focus on employment, education, and
adapting to civilian life without the stress of a basic need
such as housing.
• Having a home should not be a PRIVILEGE. It is a basic
human need.
